“Julian Ptomey is justly proud of this fine trophy buck that he bagged on the last day of 1980. Julian killed the 11-pointer on Wednesday of last week. Julian is the popular carrier of the mail to patrons of R.F.D. Two, Evergreen.”

“The Monroe Academy Vols defeated Sparta Academy’s Warriors in the finals of the boys division, and the Fort Dale Academy Warriors defeated Sparta in the finals of the girls division to win the championships of the Sparta Holiday Tournament held in the school gymnasium on Dec. 29 and 30, according to Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
“The Sparta boys defeated Wilcox Academy’s Wildcats handily, 76-64, in the opening round as Jeff Johnson hit for 30 points and Vince Watts, 20; Joe McInvale had eight; Ed Carrier and Terry Shipp, seven each; Scotty Grace, three; and Andy Hammonds, one.
“Monroe’s Vols outshot the Warriors, 75-60, in the championship game in spite of Terry Shipp hitting for 19 points and Jeff Johnson, 17. Joe McInvale added eight, Vince Watts, six; Andy Hammonds, four; Wes Brown, three; and Ed Carrier, two.
“Cathy Cope was the only Warrior girl in double figures as she meshed 10 points in a game won by Fort Dale, 39-29, in the championship tilt. Karen Brown had seven points, Cheri Johnson, six; Julie Saunders, four; and Missy Price, two.
“Julie Saunders, Karen Brown and Jeff Johnson were named to the all tournament team, according to Warren.”

“Both the Sparta Academy varsity teams, boys and girls, were eliminated in the first round of the Greenville Academy Christmas Tournament.”

“STEVE IS BAPTIST SWEETHEART: Fabulous Steve Sloan who directed the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide to the National Football Championship will be in Evergreen Monday night as speaker at the Evergreen Baptist Church’s Sweetheart Banquet. Sloan, who broke all manner of passing records at Alabama and in the magnificent win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, is a leader in the Christian Athletes Fellowship and has spoken to numerous church groups over the South. He will speak briefly at the banquet which begins at 7 p.m. at the Evergreen High School Lunchroom and it is a sellout, according to Miss Connie Sue Gunter, ticket sales chairman. However, Dr. Sam Granade, pastor of the church, said today that arrangements have been made for Steve to speak to the public at 8 p.m. in EHS Memorial Gymnasium. Those wishing to see and here ‘Mr. Quarterback’ had better come early to get a good seat. Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant has termed Sloan ‘the most accurate passer I have ever seen.’ The Atlanta Falcons signed him for pro football for a whopping bonus of over $100,000.’”

From “Front Page, Upper Left Corner” by Bob Bozeman – “Evergreen is standing right up at the top of the list when it comes to attracting headline speakers.
“In January, the Evergreen Quarterback Club had the nation’s finest pass receiving coach here for its football banquet when Alabama Assistant Coach Richard Williamson was speaker.”

“Aggies Rip Greenville by 38 to 18: Led by Gwyn Daniels and Jeff Moorer, a fast moving Aggie quint completely outclassed Greenville’s Tigers in Memorial Gym Tuesday night. Daniels dropped 12 markers while Moorer rammed home nine in the low scoring conflict.”

“Andalusia And Monroeville Are On Week’s Cage Slate: The Evergreen Aggies will meet two of their old foes during the coming week as they move into the final games of their cage slate. Tomorrow (Friday) night, the Evergreens encounter the Andalusia Bulldogs in Andalusia. This is the first time that the Aggies have played the Bulldogs this season, but a good hard-fought game is always typical of Evergreen and Andalusia rivalry. The Aggies edged the Bulldogs in a 13-12 thriller on the gridiron the past football season and doubtless the Bulldogs will have revenge in their hearts when they take the floor against the Aggies Friday night.
“On Tuesday night the Aggies will attempt to do what only one team this season has done and that’s defeat the Monroeville Tigers. The lone mar on an otherwise perfect season was a three-point loss handed the Tigers in Mobile by UMS. Monroeville ranks high in state cage circles having defeated such formidable foes as Selma and T.R. Miller, the latter’s only loss of the season. The game promises to be a crowd pleaser because of the keen rivalry that has always existed between Evergreen and Monroeville. This is the first time that Monroeville has played in Evergreen since the football game played here in the fall of 1947.”

“The students (at Nichburg Junior High School) will get their first taste of basketball Friday at three o’clock when the local sextette meets Coach Davie’s Limehill squad at Limehill.”

“County Training School Win and Lose: The victory march of the County Training School five was halted momentarily Friday afternoon by the Lomax Hannon quintet at Greenville. The CCTS boys playing a splendid defensive game were unable to get their eyes on the basket. Augustus Brown, ‘Crip shot artist,’ of CCTS was well covered and had to be satisfied with only four points. Welch tallied the other four points as the game ended 9-8 with CCTS on the short end of the score.
“Leaving Greenville, the team hurried to Georgiana, where they met and conquered a fast and flashy team by a score of 15-11. The entire team played inspired basketball as they vowed not to lose two games in one day.”

“Several New Features Slated For Field Day: Everyone who will witness the Field Day activities this year will have a chance to see several new athletic stunts, relays and races.
“A special quarter and half mile relays top the special events for the day. Professors E. Poole of Sandy Grove and H.W. Hardy of Nichburg are determined to defeat Principal C.A. Jackson’s quarter and half milers in the special events involving the three schools.”
