APRIL 10, 2003

“Evergreen Little League held their opening day ceremonies this past Saturday morning. The Tee-ballers were having a blast at their end of the field as can be seen in this photo. A big crowd was on hand for the event.”

“Joyce Moon, a pistol packin’ great grandma, killed her first turkey recently. The gobbler weighed 20 pounds, had an 11-inch beard and one-inch spurs. Joyce works at Your Bait/Trophy Shop.”

“Rhett Butler of Arkansas killed this gobbler last week while visiting Evergreen’s own World Champion Turkey Caller Eddie Salter. The gobbler weighed 19-1/2 pounds and had an 11-inch beard. Eddie must be losing his touch as he gets older because it took 15 minutes for Eddie to call up the gobbler for Rhett to shoot.”

“Myles Wiggins had a very exciting spring break as he bagged his first gobbler on Tues., March 25. George Bolton called the turkey up for him to shoot. The gobbler weighed 17 pounds and had a 9-1/2 inch beard and 6/8-inch spurs.”

“When Myles Wiggins wasn’t turkey hunting during spring break, he went fishing. He caught this nine-pound bass on Fri., March 28.”

“Colby Hayes had an exciting spring break as he bagged his first gobbler. Colby’s dad called the turkey up for him to shoot. The gobbler weighed 18 pounds, had a nine-inch beard and one-inch spurs.”

APRIL 14, 1988

“Trooper 234 attends Spring Camporee: The competition was fierce among the Scout Troops from all over South Alabama at the Annual Spring Camp-o-ree at Camp McMillan April 8-10. Scouts from Troop 234 scored high in the ranking and took several first and second place awards in events from knot tying to bow saw competition. Two patrols led by patrol leaders Matthew Hartley and Darryl Fox scored on every area of outdoorsmanship and came in second in the Show-n-Do competition.
“Three members, David Adams, Danny Jenkins and Scouting committee chairman Ray Tolbet were ‘Tapped Out’ at the Annual Order of the Arrow campfire ceremony.
“Matthew Hartley, son of Tommy and Gloria Hartley, was selected by all Scoutmasters as Best Scout for the 1987-88 year. The Best Scout Award is given to young men who exhibit a willingness to help younger Scouts while giving service above the normal in his community and Scout Troop.
“Webelos Pack 234 also camped out and cheered the Scouts on. Webelos included Robert Tolbert, Josh Deason, Michael King, Lewis Cantwell, Jeramy Richer, Heath Harper, Jeramy Chavers, Aaron Goodman and Ronald Waters. Troop 234 and Pack 234 are sponsored by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Poole Truck Line, Inc. Want your son to have the summer of his life? APRIL 12, 1973

“J.W. Coburn holds the trophy he won recently at Brooklyn Speedway in the Spectator Class. He drives a six-cylinder Chevy. With Coburn are his two sons-in-law, Jack Gantt of Evergreen and Wayne McNeil of Crestview. Coburn is a farmer and his only son, James, is in the Air Force Academy.”

“Alex Johnson bagged this fine gobbler Saturday morning. The turkey had an 11-inch beard and weighed 17-1/2 pounds. Johnson is principal of Southside School.”

“Sparta Warriors end Spring drills: The Sparta Academy Warriors concluded spring practice on Monday night, April 2, with a convincing Green victory in the first Green and Gold game.
“The Green team controlled the game with hard running and quick passing. Walt Lee Ward started the scoring with a 95-yard run. Eddie Hooks took a 45-yard pass from quarterback Bruce Hutcheson. The first half ended with the score, 18-0. Sam Skipper scored the only touchdown for the Gold team as the game ended, 40-8.”

“There will be plenty of action such as barrel races Saturday night when the Lyeffion Saddle Club presents its annual Horse Show. The show will consist of halter classes, western pleasure, timed events and some of the top ropers in the South. A goat scrambler will be held for children under 10, with cash prizes awarded to the winners. This has in the past been a very exciting event, both for the participants and especially for the spectators. The show will start at 5 p.m.”

APRIL 10, 1958

“Aggies Win Opener; Drop Lyeffion 2-0: The Evergreen Aggies baseball team started the hard ball season on the right foot by dropping the Lyeffion Yellow Jackets, 2-0. Ken Tucker was the inning pitcher and Dees was credited with the loss for Lyeffion.
“Other than giving up two bases on balls, Dees of Lyeffion pitched a fine game. He fanned 16 batters and allowed only two hits.
“Ken Tucker who pitched the first five innings for the Aggies gave up two hits and no walks. Bill Ivey pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit and no walks.
“Dees led the Lyeffion batters with a double and a triple. Cook got the other Jacket hit, a single. Daniels had a double, and Tucker a single for the Aggies.
“The lineup and batting order for Evergreen and Lyeffion was: Evergreen: Daniels, CF; Ellington, LF; Grace, RF; Pate, 1B; Bateman, SS; Ansley, 2B; W.A. Pate, 3B; Melton, C; Tucker, P; Ivey, P.
“Lyeffion: Burt, 2B; Coker, SS; Dees, P; G. House, 3B; Riley, C; Anthoney, 1B; Cook, CF; J.House, RF; Hick, RF; Powell, LF.”

“The Evergreen Golf Club’s annual one-day tournament is scheduled for today. If weather is good a large number of golfers from over South Alabama and Northwest Florida are expected to enter the invitational tournament.”

“The first player try-out for the Evergreen Junior Leagues scheduled yesterday was canceled by rain. Another is scheduled next Wednesday afternoon and another on the Wednesday following.”

APRIL 8, 1943

“Norman Bassett, formerly sports and telegraph editor of The Tuscaloosa (Daily) News, has been promoted to managing editor to succeed Ben Green.”

“The Lo-No-Pla Music Club entertained the Boy and Girl Scouts last Thursday night at Mrs. White’s S.S. rooms. About 20 were present. They played games throughout the evening after which refreshments were served.”
