Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .20 inches of rain on April 11, 2011 and .45 inches of rain on April 15, 2011.

“The Conecuh County Commission approved Conecuh Woods’ application to construct a landfill between Repton and Range by a 3-2 vote on Monday.
“During a special meeting Monday morning at the Conecuh County Government Center in downtown Evergreen, commissioners Wendell Byrd, Jerold Dean and Leonard Millender cast the deciding ‘yes’ votes in favor of the landfill application.
“Commissioners Hugh Barrow and D.K. Bodiford cast ‘no’ votes against the application.
“Monday’s meeting began a few minutes after 9 a.m. and was held before a standing-room-only crowd in the commission’s meeting chamber on the ground floor of the courthouse.
“After an opening prayer by Byrd, who also serves as the commission’s chairman, and the Pledge of Allegiance, County Attorney Richard Nix began the meeting by suggesting that the commission vote on the application by roll call vote, a method of voting in which each commissioner would either answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ when his name was called by county administrator, Judy Covan.”

“Earl Lavon Thompson, 63, of Evergreen was fatally injured when he was struck by a train Monday at 9:43 a.m. at the railroad crossing near the intersection of West Front Street and Belleville Street in Evergreen.”

“Over $30,000 was raised last Friday night at the 2nd Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life. The event was held at the Evergreen Municipal Park and the event was a huge success.”

“A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday at Conecuh County Emergency Medical Services, the new ambulance service owned by Sid, Veronica and Michael Lambert. The office is located at 106 McGehee St.”

“Otis Eugene Johnson, 68, of Rt. 1, Range died Fri., April 12, 1996 in Range.
“He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Master Mason Pascagoula No. 419, a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 151 in Pascagoula, a deacon and trustee of the Range Freewill Baptist Church, a board member of the Range Volunteer Fire Dept., a board member of the Range Cemetery, and board member of the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home in Eldridge, Ala.”

“Local Woodmen of the World Field Representative Mitch Crutchfield presented the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library with a new flag to replace the old one. John Curry accepted the flag on behalf of the library.”

“On April 9, Cpl. Frank Higginbotham of the Alabama State Troopers office met with Tiger Cub Scouts Den 1 and Bear Cub Scouts Den 4 of the Evergreen Pack 217 to discuss bicycle and other safety issues. Present were John Higginbotham, Gaston Bozeman, Lee Brown, Justin Williamson, Christopher Goneke, Lee Carrier, Carter Smith, Christopher Tyndol, Lane Carrier, Erik Morris and Jeremy Smelley.”

“The 36th Annual Conecuh County 4-H and FFA Steer Show will be held here Monday at the Evergreen Cooperative Stockyard Livestock Arena. A total of 19 youngsters will exhibit steers.”

“Tammy Michelle Elliott, a fifth-grader at Southside Elementary School, won the Conecuh County Spelling Bee held March 26 at the County Board of Education office. Her instructor is Mrs. Ceola J. Johnson. Tammy will compete in the State Spelling Bee in Birmingham.”

“Judges of the Conecuh County Spelling Bee held March 26 at the Board of Education offices in Evergreen were Mrs. Bertha Johnson, Mrs. Virginia Rankin and Mrs. Beth Holland. Mrs. Ola Mason was coordinator and Mrs. Jane Smith the announcer.”

“The Conecuh County Commission recently created ‘The New Courthouse Committee,’ named Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key chairman and appointed members. The committee was asked to make studies, etc. leading to recommendations to the commission on the construction of a new county courthouse.”

“The Weather: Earl Windham turned in his weekly weather report with only this comment: ‘No rain this time.’”

APRIL 21, 1966

“Tommy Lee Simms, 17, of Milton, Fla., formerly of Evergreen, died instantly April 16 at 4:15 a.m. within two blocks of his home while on his paper route, when a drunken driver traveling at a high rate of speed struck him from the rear. He won quite a few prizes for his outstanding work with the Pensacola News-Journal.”

“Miss Betty Baggett, a Repton High School 4-H’er, won top honors at the 21st Annual Conecuh County 4-H and FFA Fat Calf Show here Monday. Betty’s fine Polled Hereford took the Grand Championship.”

“Former Governor John Patterson brings his campaign for a second term to Conecuh County today with a major address scheduled in Evergreen this afternoon at four o’clock.
“Patterson’s address will be from a bandstand in ‘No-Man’s Land,’ downtown parking area. Prior to his talk, Rebe Gosdin and his Sunny Valley Gang will entertain the crowd.”

“Charles C. Higdon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Higdon, Route 2, Box 34, Evergreen, was commissioned an Army second lieutenant after graduating from the Infantry Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Ga., April 14. The 23-year-old officer is a 1960 graduate of Evergreen High School.”

“Burglars cracked the safe at Conecuh-Monroe Counties Gas District here Thursday night and got away with over $1,500; however most of the loot was in checks that already bore the District’s ‘for deposit only’ endorsement.”

APRIL 19, 1951

“A 725-pound Black Angus-Hereford crossbreed owned and shown by Dennis Bailey Jr. was judged the Grand Champion of the Sixth Annual Conecuh County 4H-FFA Fat Calf Show held Monday at the Conecuh Cooperative Stockyard. The Reserve Champion was owned and shown by Dudley Ellis.”

“Four Point Service Station, owned and operated by J.S. Thornley, was entered between seven and eight o’clock Monday night, a small iron safe blown and approximately $400 in cash stolen. The burglar or burglars gained entrance by prying off the lock to the front door. A tin can containing about $80 in silver dollars was left on the counter near the safe. The burglary, according to officers, has all the earmarks of being the work of professionals.
“Mr. Thornley closed his station about seven o’clock and went home. About eight o’clock or a little before, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Fore noticed the door open as they drove by in their car. Upon investigation they found that the door had been forced and they immediately called Mr. Thornley who came and notified Sheriff J.H. Brock. Therefore, the burglary apparently occurred in less than an hour after Mr. Thornley closed.”

“An old-fashioned square dance will be held at Evergreen High School’s Memorial Gym tomorrow (Friday) night. The dance is sponsored by the Evergreen High School Band, Frank Wilkerson Director. Proceeds will be used to make a payment on the band’s snappy uniforms.”
