“For the third straight year, the Orioles captured the Evergreen Little League championship, finishing the season with a 10-2 record. Players and coaches on the team include Camesha Crimpton, Cornelius Dennis, Hunter Bolton, Zane Lambert, Nathan Pipkin, Evontae Johnson, Coach Ricky Tolbert, Johnny Hart, Corinthian Cunningham, Coach Brian Martin, Keyshawn Roache, Taylor Chavers, Coach Eric Johnson and Corinna Watkins.”
“Clint Lowery was named Sparta Academy’s new head football and baseball coach during the past week and is already working to prepare the Warriors for the upcoming football season.
“Lowery is a 33-year-old native of Georgiana and graduated from Greenville’s Fort Dale Academy in 1994. During his days as a high school athlete, Lowery played football, baseball and threw the discus on the track and field team.”
“Evergreen’s 14-and-under youth basketball team will travel to Birmingham June 18-22 to take part in the Alabama Sports Festival’s youth basketball tournament. Members of the team are Evergreen Youth Basketball Director Earnest Boykin, Michael Bradley, Kyantrae Lewis, Keyshawn Roache, LaQuienton Prince, LaBarron Dees, Axavian Ingram, Mydarius Trujillo, Deionta Lee and Coach Leamon Jones.”

“Lauretta Freeman of Mobile, All American basketball player at Auburn from 1989-1993, was the speaker at the Repton School 8th grade honors day last week. “Ansell Thomas received the Most Improved Baseball Player and Shannon Sims received the Most Valuable Baseball Player awards at the Hillcrest Athletic dinner held recently at the school.”

“Morris Purcell presents the ‘Purcell Most Dedicated Player Trophy’ to Dirk Bell at a recent awards banquet honoring athletes at Tallassee High School. Dirk is the son of Wayne Bell and the late Jean Bell, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Brooks and Mr. and Mrs. Terrel Bell of Evergreen. Among his honors, Dirk was elected captain of the 1978 football team and 1978-79 basketball team, most valuable player in track, selected on The Montgomery Advertiser-Journal All-Metro Football team two years as a defensive back and on the All Elmore County Football Team for two years. He will attend the University of Alabama this Fall where he plans to go out for football as a ‘walk on’ candidate.”

“Rider Club meet: Miller Sellers and other horse owners in the area are attempting to start a riding club. Sellers said that interested persons are urged to attend an organizational meeting Thursday night, June 11, at 7:30 in the grand jury room at the courthouse.
“Two films of the care and feeding of horses will be shown. A sack of horse feed will be given as a door prize. Anyone interested in horses, regardless of age, is urged to attend the meeting.”
“Sr. League meets, lists players: The second meeting of the Evergreen Senior League was held in the civic room of the courthouse Monday night, June 1, 1964, at 7:30. The meeting was presided over by President Bill Chapman. After discussing the general rules and specifications governing league play, the managers completed their rosters by bidding on the new players coming into the league.
“Any Senior League boy not playing ball this year is requested to bring his uniform by Station WBLO as soon as possible.
“The rosters for the Senior League are: Braves Johnny Brown, Jud Stinson, George Stinson, Bobby Sasser, James Adams, Grover Jackson, Don Hansen, Forrest Simpson, Charley Wild, John Adams, Gray Sullivan and Eddie Rawls.
“Pirates: Mike Moorer, Tommy Chapman, Benny Burt, Ronnie Chastain, Steve Baggett, Johnny Thornley, Harold Hamiter, Ralph Deason, Elliott Quarles and Wayne Hicks.
“Indians: Knud Nielsen, Claude Nielsen, Ed Smith, Bill Snowden, Bubba Mininger, Bill Bailey, Wayne Caylor, Jerry Caylor, Thomas Riley, Larry Wright, Tommy Weaver and Dan Johnson.

“SR. LEAGUE SCHEDULE: The Evergreen Senior Baseball League will start play next Monday night at six o’clock. Game time for all games will be at 6 p.m. The league will take a breather July 5 through 12 for Boy Scout Camp.”

“Check Ellis To Play With Brewton Millers: Chester ‘Check’ Ellis Jr. was to begin working out with the Brewton Millers of the Alabama State League tonight and expects to sign with the Class ‘D’ club in a few days. ‘Check,’ a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, talked with Miller manager Norman Veazy Monday and was told to report for practice today.
“Check has been attending Troy State Teachers College, and for the past two months has pitched for Colquitt in a very fast semi-pro loop in South Georgia. He was a star athlete at Evergreen High School, where he received his diploma and played with the Evergreen Greenies last year after completing a hitch in the Navy.”
“Evergreen Handicap Golf Tournament Starts Today: Thirty-four men and four ladies are scheduled to tee off this afternoon at the Evergreen Country Club golf course in the Evergreen Golf Club’s Handicap Tournament. The tourney is designed to give the best golfer and lowest dub an equal chance of winning. The golfers will start play at 1:30 this afternoon (Thursday).
“In the men’s division three trophies await the winners. The winner, runner-up and consolation winner will each receive a cup. In addition, six golf balls will go to the player firing the lowest net medal score this afternoon.
“Four ladies will vie for two prizes in the ladies division. Mrs. Helen Kamplain plays Mrs. Katie Newman and Mrs. Velma Cope plays Mrs. Mary Nielsen. The winners of these two matches will play for the championship trophy and the losers meet in a consolation match with three golf balls going to the winner.
“The matches this afternoon for the men are Truman Hyde vs. Jack Newman, Horace Deer vs. C.T. Ivey, Temple Millsap vs. Dr. Bill Turk, Waynard Price vs. Sam Cope, Henry Sessions vs. Roy Pace, Ray Canterbury vs. Lawton Kamplain, Bayne Petrey vs. Frank Johnson, Bob Bozeman vs. Bonnie King, Sam Granade vs. Bill Cardwell, C.A. “The trophies are exhibited in the window of Canterbury Hardware, Inc. A score card giving an account of the results of the tournament and showing the next matches will also be kept in this window. The public is invited to come out and watch the matches at the golf course six miles north on Highway 31 at the Evergreen Country Club.”
“Organization of a Cub Scout Pack was begun in Evergreen in April. The Pack was designated Cub Pack 40 of Evergreen, Ala. and is sponsored by the City School PTA. Since organization began 38 boys have been registered and divided into four dens.”
