It’s Wednesday, so today I give you my weekly list of movies that will open in theatres this week as well as a list of movies that will be released this week on DVD.
I hope this will serve as a useful guide as to what’s going on this week if you happen to be near a movie theatre or if you’re looking for something to drop into your NetFlix queue or pick up at the local Redbox.
Movies that are scheduled to hit theatres this week include:
- 12 Years a Slave (Drama, R): Directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti.
- Adventures in the Sin Bin (Comedy): Directed by Billy Federighi and starring Bo Burnham, Michael Seater, Emily Meade, Gillian Jacobs and Ben McKenzie.
- Big Ass Spider! (Science Fiction, Suspense, PG-13): Direcrted by Mike Mendez and starring Greg Grunberg, Ray Wise, Lin Shaye, Lombardo Boyar and Clare Kramer.
- Carrie (Horror, R): Directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday and Alex Russell.
- Chinese Zodiac (Action, Adventure, PG-13): Directed by Jackie Chan and starring Chan, Qi Shu, Oliver Platt, Daniel Wu and Laura Weissbecker.
- Escape Plan (Action, Suspense, R): Directed by Mikael Hafstrom and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jim Caviezel, Sam Neill and Vincent D’Onofrio.
- The Fifth Estate (Drama, R): Directed by Bill Condon and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Bruhl, Carice Van Houten, Peter Capaldi and Dan Stevens.
- I’m in Love with a Church Girl (Drama, Romance, PG): Directed by Steve Race and starring Adrienne Bailon, Ja Rule, Michael Madsen, Stephen Baldwin and Martin Kove.
- Kill Your Darlings (Drama, R): Directed by John Krokidas and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Michael C. Hall and Elizabeth Olsen.
- The Stream (Action, Comedy, PG): Directed by Estlin Feigley and starring Mario Lopez, Christopher Gorham, Kelly Rutherford, Rainn Wilson and Jacob M. Williams.
New DVD releases this week include:
- The Colony (Action, Science Fiction): Directed by Jeff Renfroe and starring Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton, Kevin Zegers, Charlotte Sullivan and John Tench.
- Dirty Wars (Documentary): Directed by Richard Rowley and starring Jeremy Scahill.
- The Heat (Comedy, Action, R): Directed by Paul Feig and starring Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Demian Bichir, Michael Rapaport and Marlon Wayans.

If I could only watch one movie at the theatre this week, it would be “Carrie,” and if I had to pick just one DVD to rent this week, it would be “Pacific Rim.”
