Glennis Curry reclaims top spot in local ESPN college football contest

As of this writing, four teams have been eliminated from the Major League Baseball playoffs – the Oakland A’s, the Detroit Tigers, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the American League, the Royals and Orioles are set to face off in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series, starting tomorrow (Friday) night. I look for the Orioles to come out ahead in that one, but I don’t think it’ll be a clean sweep.

Over in the National League, as of Monday afternoon, the San Francisco Giants had a two-game lead over the Washington Nationals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals were tied at one game apiece in the National League Division Series.

I look for the Giants and Dodgers to advance to the National League Championship Series. If that comes to pass, I predict that the Dodgers to win the National League pennant.

If the Dodgers and the Orioles end up in the World Series, it should be a good one. If those two meet up, I’ll be pulling for the Orioles to win all the way.

The sixth week of our local ESPN College Football Pick ‘Em contest has come and gone, and the standings after the dust had settled showed that Glennis Curry had retaken the top spot. Glennis had held sole possession of first place for about three straight weeks, but was knocked off the top of the mountain last week by Mike Dailey.

This week, Glennis went back to No. 1, and Mike dropped to third, where he’s tied with Steve Stacey, who was in fifth place last week. Aaron Albritton went from sixth place to second place, and Rod Sims dropped from fourth place to fifth place.

Ricky Powell went from seventh place to sixth place. Barlow_91, who was in third place last week, dropped to seventh place this week. (Barlow_91, if you’re reading this, please send me your real name.)

Mark Peacock, who was tied for seventh place last week, dropped to eighth place. Arthur Ingram III went from seventh place to ninth place. Jeremy Matheny and Sharon Peacock were tied for the tenth place spot.

(For those of you out there wondering, the local sports columnist was sharing 15th place with Casey Grant and Hunter Norris.)

If you’re playing this local contest and didn’t finish in the Top 10, don’t sweat it. This contest will run for eight more weeks, and it’s a marathon not a sprint. You’ll find that the standings will change a lot over the next two months.

In the SEC this week, there are five head-to-head games between conference opponents on Saturday and three other games involving SEC schools.

Auburn will play Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. in Starkville, and Alabama will play Arkansas at 5 p.m. in Fayetteville. LSU will play Florida at 6:30 p.m. in Gainesville, and Ole Miss will play Texas A&M at 8 p.m. in College Station. Georgia will play Missouri at 11 a.m. in Columbia.

Louisiana-Monroe will play Kentucky at 11 a.m. in Lexington, and Chattanooga will play Tennessee at 3 p.m. in Knoxville. Charleston Southern will play Vanderbilt at 6:30 p.m. in Nashville. South Carolina doesn’t play this week.

For what it’s worth, here’s how I see each of those games playing out. I like Alabama over Arkansas, Auburn over Mississippi State, Georgia over Missouri, Florida over LSU, Texas A&M over Ole Miss, Kentucky over Louisiana-Monroe, Tennessee over Chattanooga and Vanderbilt over Charleston Southern.

Last week: 2-4. So far this season: 44-12.
