“Council gives $5,000 to
light baseball field: The Evergreen City Council voted to honor a commitment
made by a previous administration to help put lights on the baseball field at
Hillcrest High School. Ron King came before the council Tuesday night and asked
the council to honor the city’s pledge of $5,000 that was made several years
ago. King said that they are going to replace the lights on the football field
and place the old lights at the baseball field.
“The council agreed to
appropriate the $5,000 but they stipulated that the work be cleared through the
Board of Education and a letter be sent to the city showing their approval. The
council also stipulated that the lights only be used by the Babe Ruth League
for the District Tournament so it does not conflict with Hillcrest baseball.
Babe Ruth President Sean Klaetsch told the council that still will not solve
their problem of not having a regulation field to play on during the regular
season. Klaetsch said they still will not be playing on a regulation field
until the tournament, and they won’t be used to the larger field.”
“Warriors defeat Escambia
35-25: The Sparta Academy Warriors defeated Escambia Academy, 35-25, on Friday,
Sept. 27, at Stuart-McGehee Field.
“Brandon Burleson was the
leading rusher for the Warriors with 103 yards on 14 carries and one TD.”
Other standout Sparta players
in that game included Jeremy Anderson, Perry Castleberry, Wiley Cobb, John
McGinitie and Matt Robinson.

“Alba Sharks axe Aggies late,
21-3: The Evergreen Aggies lost their third game in a row last week to the Alba
Sharks by the score of 21-3.
“Evergreen got their only
points of the night when Patrick Atkins returned a fumble 61 yards to the Alba
four-yard line and Evergreen had to settle for a 21-yard field goal by Russell
Meeks with 2:47 left in the third quarter to cut the Alba lead to 7-3.
“Evergreen never seriously
threatened after their field goal to lose their third game in a row after two
early season wins. The Evergreen Aggies will be out to get back in the win
column tomorrow night as they play host to the W.S. Neal Blue Eagles in their
first area game of the year.
“With W.S. Neal and Luverne
both area games and both back to back, the Aggies will find out in the next
couple of weeks whether they will contend for the area title.”
“Sparta slips by SMA 14-7:
The Sparta Academy Warriors recorded their second win of the season, defeating
South Montgomery Academy, 14-7, here Friday night at Stuart-McGehee Field.
Robbie Bolton scored on a five-yard run and Jeff Carrier ran in from four yards
out. Jamie Deason placekicked both extra points.
“Carrier led the Sparta
attack with 65 yards on 13 carries; Deason, 14 on two; Lee Wild, 11 on three;
Brad Watts, three on four; Jeff Brundage, zero on one; and Kenny Bledsoe lost
25 on two.
“Bledsoe completed one of two
passes for 31 yards. Watts threw incomplete twice and Wild’s one pass was
intercepted. Watts had one reception for 31 yards.”

“Sparta Warriors nip Wesleyan
6-0: The Sparta Academy Warriors ran their record to 3-1 with a 6-0 victory
over Wesleyan Academy of Citronelle at Stuart-McGehee Field here Saturday
night.
“Unable to capitalize on
numerous breaks, the Warriors finally got the win when Buddy Monroe ran a punt
back some 70 yards for a TD. The point try failed. The Warriors defense held
the victors in check, causing fumbles and interceptions.
“Aggies lose fifth in second
half, Tigers win 22-12: Amidst all the political campaigning, Evergreen Aggie
Head Coach Dero Wise might be starting one himself: a campaign to abolish
second halves of high school football games.
“Week before last, his Aggies
gave in to a powerful Butler Tiger Club in the second half after holding the
game scoreless, and this week the script was similar. The winless Aggies
dropped their fifth decision of the year to the Greenville Tigers, 22-12, after
leading 12-0 when the first half ended.
“Explosive running and
sensational defensive efforts by half back James Merril and Wavie Ausby stole
the glory the first half to put the Aggies on top, 12-0, with the Tigers
scoreless at half. The Tigers came back the second half with good breaks and
determination to must the Aggies, 22-12.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies
just kept on knocking Friday night and the door finally opened midway in the
final quarter. Robert Ellington raced home with the game’s only marker as the
Evergreens edged Monroeville, 6-0.
“The victory proved an expensive
one. Veteran guard George Bolton injured a shoulder and is probably lost for
the season. Byron Warren, defensive specialist, came on to fill in capably on
offense after Bolton was lost.”
Other standout Evergreen
players in that game included Jimmy Bell, Robbie Boykin, Billy Grace, Jerry
Mitchell, Jimmy Moorer, James Nelson, Paul Pace and Buddy Zukowski. Wendell
Hart was Evergreen’s head coach.
“The Frisco City Whippets
scored four times in the last half to down the Repton Bulldogs, 41-0, Monday night.
The game was played in Frisco City and had been moved up from Thursday night
because of rain.”
“Lyeffion and Repton renew
their rivalry in the annual cross-country football battle Friday night. The
tilt is set at the Repton field.
“The contest is the first of
the season for Coach Delvin Lathan’s Yellow Jackets. The Jackets were scheduled
to open their season last week with Beatrice. The game was postponed when flu
laid low about half of the Eagle squad.
“Coach Lathan lists his
probably starters for the Repton game: LE, Willard Wall, LT, Cecil Salter; LG,
Douglas Burt or James Hicks on offense, and Larry Pate on defense, C, Geral
Dean; RG, Haywood Coker; RT, Kenneth Dunn; RE, David Watts; QB, Billy Salter;
LH, Danny Covin or Billy Watts; RH, Eugene Powell; and FB, Hagood House.
“(Repton head) Coach (Mack)
Primm will probably start: Barry Ryland at left end, Rufus Allen or Ervin
Baggett at left tackle, Marvin Cotton at left guard, Cleveland Morris at
center, Carlos Brooks at right guard, James Lee at right tackle, Rayburn Nall
at right end, Frank Calvert or Wayne Ivey at quarterback, Johnny Owens at left
half, Guy Miniard at right half, and Franklin Baggett at fullback.”

“Evergreen Loses Game to Red
Level: The local football team lost a hard fought game to Red Level at McKenzie
last Saturday by the score of 19 to 0. The Aggies were greatly crippled due to
the fact that Sanders and Salter were both out of the game. These two are
considered among the very best and their absence was no doubt responsible for
the one-sided score. It may be said that the new material, which largely made
up the team sent against the Red Level team, put up a good fight and they
showed the making of a good team with a little more seasoning and experience.
“The next game will be fought
out on the local field with Castleberry, next Friday. This is Castleberry’s
second year to have a football team and it is said that Coach Hillman boasts of
having some excellent material which is going to give the locals something to
worry about. Last year, the score was very one-sided in Evergreen’s favor. On
the other hand, the Aggies are determined to maintain the championship of
Conecuh County which they have held for these many years. Those who desire to
see a real good high school game should procure a ticket and run down to
Gantt’s Field at 3:15 Friday afternoon. They will get their money’s worth and
then some.”
