“Aggies win fourth straight:
The Evergreen Aggies won for the fourth straight time this past Friday night by
downing J.F. Shields, 14-12” in Beatrice.
Evergreen got its first touchdown
of the night when quarterback Michael Adams scored on a three-yard run. Calvin
Middleton ran in the ensuing two-point conversion. Evergreen’s second touchdown
came on a three-yard run by Sanford Moye.
“The Aggie offensive player
of the week was Calvin Middleton with 80 yards rushing. The defensive player of
the week was Wendell Parker, who was in on 11 tackles. Parker also received the
Big Play of the Week Award for intercepting a J.F. Shields pass late in the
game to help preserve the Aggie victory.”
“Escambia powers by Sparta
33-6: The Escambia Academy Cougars used everything but their claws as they
handed the Warriors of Sparta Academy a 33-6 whipping here Friday night at
Stuart-McGehee Field.
“Ronny McKenzie, a junior
running back, continued to use all of the blocking available as he posted still
another more than 100-yard per game rushing. In fact, Ronny logged 194 yards on
26 carries, according to Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.,
including a beautiful, twisting, dodging and determined 25-yard run for
Sparta’s only score.
“Jeff Hammonds netted 19
yards on nine runs; Tony Baggett, 12 on four; Terry Peacock, returning to
action after an early season injury, 12 on four trips. Peacock completed one
pass to Tony Raines that was good for 19 yards, however, there was no
connection on his eight attempts.
“Head Coach Rob Kelly and
Assistant Coach Bo Owens named Greg Anthony as Lineman of the Week for his
outstanding play on offense and defense. Greg led the tackle chart with seven

“Neal Edges Aggies; Play In
Greenville: W.S. Neal’s Blue Eagles edged the Evergreen Aggies 13 to 6 Friday
night in Brooks Stadium. Both teams were hurt by a ‘virus’ that had several
performers out of action, but the game was a good, interesting one.
“Evergreen fans were most
pleased with the bursting of Jimmy Warren into prominence as the hardest
running back in the green and white in a number of years. Filling in for an
ailing Mike Mininger at fullback, Jimmy ran extremely hard and well and topped
all ground gainers.
“Neal turned a fumble
recovery in the first period into a 62-yard touchdown march. Allen Goolsby went
27 yards for the score and Wayne Baldwin ran untouched off tackles for the
point to make it 7-0 with 5:38 gone.
“The Aggies hammered out a
90-yard march to score in the second quarter. Paul Deason started it with a
four-yard carry. Scott Cook got four and Warren smashed for 14 and a first.
Deason hit for eight and Warren two and then seven and another first on the
Aggie 49. Warren got three, Cook one and Neal caught at 15-yard penalty for
personal foul and it was first on the Eagle 38. Warren went for four and Larry
Ellis got loose off left tackle and did some fancy running for 34 yards and the
score. Warren was stopped inches short on the point try and it was 7-6.
“Neal scored late in the
third quarter on a 48-yard march.
“The Aggies travel to
Greenville tomorrow night for their annual engagement with the Tigers.”

“Evergreen’s Aggies Add
Number 4 With 33 To 6 Win Over Frisco City: Unbeaten, Those Aggies Keep On
Rolling Along – BROOKS STADIUM, Friday night, Oct. 8 – Halfback John McGinty of
the Frisco City Whippets plunged over from the two to become the first man to score
on the Evergreen High Aggies this season.
“McGinty’s tally brought the
Whippets within 13 points of the Aggies and that’s the closest they came here
tonight as the Evergreen’s wrapped up their fourth straight win of the year by
a 33 to 6 count.”
Quarterback Billy Mudge Lee
scored Evergreen’s first touchdown on a one-yard run, and he also kicked the
extra point. John Greel Ralls scored Evergreen’s second touchdown on a 71-yard
run, but the Aggies missed the extra point.
Ralls picked up another
touchdown when he returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown, but the Aggies
missed another extra point. John Law Robinson scored Evergreen’s next touchdown
on a run. Lee completed a pass to Thomas Coker for the PAT.
Evergreen’s final touchdown
came when the Aggies blocked a Frisco punt, and Robinson scooped up the ball
and returned it 20 yards for the score. Lee added the extra point.
Other outstanding Evergreen
players in that game included Dudley Bartlett, Shelton Craig, Jack Cunningham,
Sammy Hanks, Bruce Johnson, James Ryan, Dean Shaver and Pete White. Wendell
Hart was Evergreen’s head coach, and an estimated crowd of 1,100 attended the
game.

“Opp Defeats Aggies By One
Touchdown: Opp Bobcats came over Friday afternoon doped to play the local
football aggregation off their feet and go home with a big one-sided score as
trophy of the occasion. Even the most optimistic of local enthusiasts predicted
that the visitors would beat the Aggies by at least three or four touchdowns.
When the Bobcats arrived in town they appeared such a husky bunch that their
stock went even higher.
“However, the old dope bucket
was destined for an upset and when the smoke of battle cleared away after one
of the hardest fought games ever witnessed on the local field, the Bobcats
could only boast of one lone touchdown. This marker was put over in the first
few minutes of play, probably on the fourth play of the game. After this, the
Aggies settled down and played such a game as perhaps they never had before. It
is generally conceded that had they fought from the first whistle as they did
from this touchdown out, the score would have been 0 to 0. Though the locals
made about as many first downs and gained nearly as much yardage after Opp
scored, their gains were not consistent enough to put over a score.
“The team that played against
Opp Friday was altogether different in spirit and appearance from the one that
defeated Excel the previous week 7 to 0. Coach McInnis and his assistant, Mr.
Howard, had smoothed out lots of rough, weak spots and the team was clicking
far better. With continued improvement the Aggies should win nearly if not all
of their games from here out.
“Friday afternoon they go up
to the McKenzie Fair to meet the Georgiana team.”
