“Fire Destroys Heading Mill:
Fire destroyed the mill and connecting warehouse at Evergreen Heading Co. early
Friday morning. The quick-spreading blaze threw a number of men out of work.
“Manager Ward Alexander said
Wednesday that computation of the loss had not been completed.
“The fire started at about
7:00 Friday morning, only minutes after workers had started the mill, which
manufactures wooden, paper-coated barrel heads. Cause of the blaze is not
certain, but it is thought that an electrical spark or a spark from a nearby
boiler room might have ignited the shavings.
“The mill and all
manufacturing equipment were completely destroyed, as was a connecting
warehouse.

operations here in 1938 and has been a mainstay in the county’s economy since
