Evergreen weather reporter Harry Ellis reported no rain between Oct. 4 and Oct. 10, 1993. He reported a high temperature of 87 degrees on Oct. 5 and a low of 42 on Oct. 10.

“The Evergreen-Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce Presents Jerry Clower Performing Live in conjunction with the 1993 Conecuh Heritage Festival, Star of the Grand Ole Opry and Nine Time ‘Country Comic of the Year,” Opening for Jerry Clower Will Be The River Road Band, Sat., Oct. 16, 1993, Brooks Memorial Stadium, Beginning at 7 p.m.”

“Valerie Griffin, 15-year-old daughter of Sawyer Griffin and Debra Griffin, was crowned Miss Heritage last Saturday night during the Miss Heritage of Conecuh County Pageant. Sponsored by the Evergreen-Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce, the event was held in the Wiley Salter Auditorium of Reid State Technical College in Evergreen.”

“Over 200 aircraft from throughout the south made a stop in Evergreen last Saturday during the Experimental Aircraft Association’s ‘fly-in.’ According to Bubba Hamiter, the annual event is growing at a tremendous rate and ‘the sky’s the limit.’”

“Historical Commission Study of Conecuh County Complete: The completion of a historical study and survey of sites and structures in Conecuh County was completed last week with a reception at the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library.”

Evergreen weather reporter Earl Windham reported no rain between Oct. 2 and Oct. 8, 1978. He reported a high of 88 on Oct. 6 and a low of 42 on Oct. 7.

“Miss Rachel Griffin was crowned as Miss Homecoming to climax homecoming at Lyeffion High School on Saturday night, Sept. 30. Miss Football is Miss Rhonda Salter. They were crowned during halftime at Lyeffion’s homecoming celebration.”

“Give now if you really wanta save the Depot: It isn’t just necessary to give your time, efforts or money if you are interested in restoring the historic L&N Railroad Co. Depot in Evergreen – it is downright essential.
“The Murder Creek Historical Society has taken the restoration of the L&N Depot, which has been listed, and approved for a federal-state grant, in the National Registry of Historical Places. The catch is that local funds must be gathered to match the federal-state grant. $56,000 has already been approved for the project, but half of that must be met with local funds.”

“One of Conecuh County’s more senior citizens, Mrs. Estelle Johnson of Burnt Corn, died on Wed., Oct. 4, at her residence. Mrs. Johnson was 100 years old and enjoyed the love and respect of her family and a wide circle of friends.”

OCT. 10, 1963

“Evergreen landed a ‘major, full-fledged trade school’ under the provisions of the governor’s trade school and junior college program. Location of the trade schools and junior colleges was decided in a meeting of the State Board of Education in Montgomery Wednesday morning.”

“Appeal Is Set To Supreme Court In School Case: The Conecuh County Board of Education has authorized its attorneys to appeal the decision of the Butler County Circuit Court in the ‘Beat 8 case.’
“Circuit Judge T.W. Thaggard, Greenville, has issued a Writ of Mandamus on Sept. 12 requiring the Butler County Board of Education to provide bus transportation for the children in the Beat 8 area of Conecuh County to the McKenzie School of the Butler County system.
“The Beat 8 residents had petitioned the court for the writ after the Conecuh County Board of Education had voted to transport children from the area affected to the schools in Evergreen rather than to McKenzie as has been done in the past.
“An appeal to the Supreme Court will be filed by the County Board’s attorneys, Jones & Nix of Evergreen and Godbold, Hobbs & Copeland of Montgomery either today or tomorrow. The Supreme Court will be asked to set aside the Writ of Mandamus issued by the Butler County Circuit Court.”

“Brooklyn Baptist Church, Brooklyn, will observe its 142nd Anniversary on Homecoming Day, Sun., Oct. 13.”

OCT. 14, 1948

“At its first meeting Tuesday night, the (Castleberry) town council elected H.G. Green as Mayor pro tem and re-elected L.H. Wilson as clerk-treasurer.
“Selection of a town Marshall was postponed until a later meeting.
“The new town officials are Forrest Castleberry, Mayor; Joe H. Carr, H.S. Green, Haskew Page Jr., L.H. Riggs and L.H. Wilson, Aldermen.”

From “This Week’s Wash” by Bob Bozeman – “I would like to remind you that there are still some copies of Mrs. Maude S. Johnston’s “BEAUTIFUL THE HILLS” at The Courant office. This book is a collection of Mrs. Johnston’s poetry.
“Mrs. Johnston taught in the rural schools of this county for many years. She is well known here. Come by and get your copy.”

“E.B. Stowers Sells Angus Cattle: E.B. Stowers of Evergreen, Ala. recently sold two purebred Aberdeen Angus bulls to J.L. Brown of McKenzie; one bull to B.H. Brown of Owassa; one bull to E.M. Amos of Brooklyn; one bull to Andrew Gibson of Castleberry; and one bull to J.L. Hanks of Georgiana.”

“The Evergreen Methodist Church will dedicate its pipe organ at the morning worship service Sunday.
“The new custom-built Moeller pipe organ was installed last week. The organ committee, composed of Mrs. E.B. Stowers, Mrs. O.C. McGehee and Mrs. Verna W. Millsap, reports that final payment has been made on the organ.”

OCT. 12, 1933

“Evergreen Will Get Invitations By Airplane: An official invitation to the citizens of Evergreen to visit Montgomery on NRA Loyalty Day, Oct. 19, will be dispatched here by special messenger Fri., Oct. 13, according to a letter to Mayor J.L. Kelly from Col. W.P. Screws, chairman of NRA Loyalty Day Parade, received this morning.
“The invitations will be dropped from an airplane flying over the city between 2:45 and three o’clock Friday afternoon, the letter stated. Citizens are asked to be on the lookout for these invitations which will be in leaflet form.”

“Former Citizen Dies At Canoe Home: Rounding out a long and useful life of 81 years, Mr. A.F. Etheridge passed away at his home at Canoe, Ala., Tues., Oct. 3. He was laid to rest in Sardis cemetery near Canoe.
“Deceased spent many years of his long life in this county and will be remembered by a host of friends who will also greatly deplore his death. For the past two years, he had made his home at Canoe. Mr. Etheridge was at one time a deputy sheriff of Conecuh County.”

“W.Y. Fleming, former superintendent of education for Lee County and for the past two years principal of the second district agricultural school at Evergreen, was a capitol visitor Saturday and said he probably would not enter the race for state superintendent setting at rest rumors that had been current in the department of education recently. It is the second time the popular educator has been mentioned for the post prior to as many campaigns.”
