Harry Ellis reported no rainfall between Oct. 29 and Nov. 4. He reported a high
of 83 degrees on Nov. 2 and a low of 35 on Oct. 29. Total rainfall for the month
of October 2001 was 3.50 inches.
“Construction is well
underway on the new school to be located on Highway 31 South in Evergreen,
which has been the center of controversy between the Board of Education and the
Evergreen City Council. The school, a state-of-the-art facility, is scheduled
to open for classes in the fall of 2002.”
“The United States Postal
Service temporarily suspended sale of their envelopes that are pre-printed with
postage as of Oct. 30, 2001, according to local postal officials.
“They are checking the
security of the envelopes in light of the recent national problems. The
suspension of the sales is for all post offices throughout the country.
“It is hoped that the
suspension of the sales will be very short, and local officials hope the
inconvenience to local customers will be minimal.
“The postal service has taken
several precautions recently to ensure the safety of both their workers and the
citizens of the United States.”
“Freddie Stallworth
officially retired after more than 25 years on and off in the law enforcement
field. He began his work in 1976 when he was hired by current Sheriff Tracy
Hawsey’s father, Jimmy, as an Evergreen city policeman.”

Earl Windham reported .64 inches of rain on Nov. 5. He reported a high of 85 on
Nov. 9 and a low of 54 on Nov. 4.
“David Lamar Burt, 61, of
Route 1, Peterman, died Friday night, Nov. 7, in a local hospital after a long
illness. He was chairman of the Conecuh County Commission and a member of a
prominent pioneer family.
“Mr. Burt was elected
chairman in 1976 and re-elected in 1980 and 1984. A popular and well known man,
he lived all of his life in the Fairnelson community. He was a successful
cattle farmer prior to being elected chairman. He had devoted his full time to
the duties of that office.
“He was an active member of
the Purnell Methodist Church, a graduate of Lyeffion High School and a veteran
of service in the U.S. Navy in World War II.”
“Mrs. Katie Sue Burt, widow
of the late Chairman David L. Burt, took the oath of office as Chairman of the
Conecuh County Commission shortly after nine o’clock Wednesday morning in the
commission meeting room. The oath of office was administered by Circuit Judge
Robert E.L. Key in the presence of the members of the commission, members of
the Burt family and friends.
“Mrs. Burt was appointed to
fill her late husband’s unexpired term at a meeting of the Commission on
Monday. The resolution appointing her was introduced by Commissioner Freddie
Stallworth and seconded by Commission Woodrow Windham and unanimously adopted.”

“Redstone Arsenal, Ala. –
Specialist Five Bobby F. Tolbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis A. Tolbert, 309
Perryman St., Evergreen, was recently promoted to his present rank. Tolbert is
presently assigned as a clerk-typist with the Foreign Liaison Division at the
U.S. Army Missile and Munitions Center and School, Redstone Arsenal. A 1965
graduate of Evergreen High School, he entered the service in May 1969.”
“Mrs. Robert G. Kendall will
serve as chairman of the 1971 Christmas Seal Campaign in Conecuh County.”
“Veterans Day parade, program
today, 10:30 a.m.: The veterans of all wars and conflicts in which the U.S. has
engaged will be honored today with a special Veterans Day Parade and Program in
downtown Evergreen.
“The Evergreen Chamber of
Commerce has asked all stores to close from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. today for
the parade and program.
“The parade will organize at
Evergreen City School and begin at 10:30 with the route of march being over the
overhead bridge, down West Front Street, across the depot crossing, up East
Front Street and into No-Man’s Land to a temporary bandstand. All veterans are
invited to join in the parade and to wear their uniforms if possible.
“Highlight of the program at
the bandstand will be an address by State Auditor Melba Till Allen. Music will
be provided by the Evergreen High School Band which will also lead the parade
under the direction of Darwin Davis.”

“Fire of an undetermined
origin swept through the Evergreen Garment Co. Saturday night.
“Over two-thirds of the
building was almost totally destroyed, causing an estimated $300,000 loss.
“The fire began about 7 p.m.
and by the time the fire department was alerted and arrived on the scene, the
plant was engulfed in flames.
“Of the town’s 4,000 persons,
about half watched the fire in horror as it burned away at the quarters of one
of the town’s largest payrolls. The next morning, those who hadn’t seen the fire
filed by to see the damage.”
“A. Bufred Johnson, longtime
Evergreen Courant employee, disclosed this week that he is accepting a position
with the Pensacola News-Journal.
“He has been employed by the
Evergreen Courant for the past 14 years, coming here on Dec. 1, 1942.”
“Hypnotic Marvels Show Here
Next Mon. Night: ‘Hypnosis Can Be Fun, and I make it my business to prove it,’
is a statement which has made Professor George Singer, famous hypnotist, one of
the outstanding entertainers in his field.
“The professor will appear
here in person Mon., Nov. 12, at City School Auditorium under the sponsorship
of the Evergreen Jaycees. He will present a two-hour show that is novel,
fantastic, sparkling and entertaining.
“The program is devoted to
hypnotism. The stage is set for the demonstrations which follow after the
professor explains the facets of the mind to the audience.”

“Rutland Funeral Home Sold To
W.S. Cope: A deal was consummated early this week whereby the Rutland Funeral Home
together with all supplies and equipment was sold by Mr. Rutland to W. Sam
Cope. Henceforth Mr. Cope will operate the business as Cope Funeral Home. He
will no longer be connected with Rutland Hardware Co.
“Mr. Cope has been in charge
of Rutland Funeral Home for the past three years and is well and favorably
known to large numbers of people in this and adjoining counties. Mrs. Cope, who
is also a licensed mortician, will assist her husband in the operation of the
home.”
“The fall term of Conecuh
County Circuit Court began at the court house Monday morning with Judge F.W.
Hare presiding.
“On Tuesday of next week the
case of the State vs. Alvin Wilkinson, charged with first degree murder, will
be tried. It will be recalled that Wilkerson is charged with the killing of his
mother-in-law, Mrs. Josephine Zellers, the killing having taken place in July
1939.”
“Pete Holman Spends Leave At
Home: Pete Holman left Friday to return to his ship at Mare Island, Calif.,
after having spent the past two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C.
Holman.
“Pete enlisted in the Navy
about three years ago and has spent most of that time at Pearl Harbor,
Philippine Islands. He was recently transferred to the ‘Trigger,’ new submarine
which was launched a few weeks ago and which will not be commissioned until
next April.”
