“Jags beat Carroll 21-7; to play Briarwood Christian in playoffs: The Hillcrest Jaguars jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 21-7 win last Friday night in Evergreen, sending the Jags to the state championship playoffs for the third consecutive year.
“Hillcrest drove 70 yards in 10 plays on their first possession to take a 6-0 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Derrick Rogers picked up a key first down with a six-yard run on fourth-and-three from the Carroll 34, and Chenson Griffin added a 25-yard run two plays later. Rogers got the score on a one-yard dive.
“Carroll then moved to the Hillcrest 42, but Jag lineman Geidiah Robbins ended the drive with a fumble recovery back at the Eagle 47. LaCheston Moore took it all the way on the next play, and Griffin’s two-point run made it 14-0 Hillcrest late in the first quarter.
“After a Jonathan Rogers interception, a Hillcrest fumble, and a Jaguar fourth-down stop, the Jags took over on their own 32 midway of the second quarter. Twelve plays and four first downs later, Derrick Rogers scored his second touchdown, this one on a 12-yard run. Dominique Etheridge’s kick gave Hillcrest a 21-0 half-time lead.
“Most of the second half was a defensive struggle, and Eagle quarterback Brandon Newman’s four-yard score with 2:47 left in the game proved to be too little, too late.
“Hillcrest travels to the Birmingham area this Friday to take on Region 4 champion Briarwood Christian Academy, 9-1 on the season, in the opening round of the playoffs.”

“The Evergreen Aggies impotent offense once again caused them to go down in defeat, this time a 43-0 whitewash at the hands of the Andalusia Bulldogs. The Aggies playing without the services of star flanker Anthony Armstrong, could not produce enough offense to put any points on the scoreboard.”
Standout Evergreen players in that game included Billy Booker, Frank McMillan and Willie Paige.

“Sparta Academy’s Miss Football, Miss Martha Gaines, was presented her gold football and bouquet prior to the game Friday night by the Warriors’ co-captains Karl Baggett and Dwight Watson.”

“Lyeffion Jackets end season Friday here vs. Red Level: Fresh off a solid homecoming victory over Highland Home, the Lyeffion High Yellow Jackets will end their season tomorrow night, meeting the Red Level Tigers at Lyeffion. Kickoff will be 7:30.
“Coach Danny Covin’s Jackets racked up a big, 30-0 win over Highland Home last Friday night to climax a successful homecoming. They will be out to close the season victoriously.”

“Miss Homecoming, Miss Helen Hendrix, and Miss Football, Miss Laura Oakley, were presented at the homecoming game at Lyeffion High School Friday night. Members of the homecoming court were Vicki Robinson, Lynn Oakley, Laura Oakley, Helen Hendrix, Sylvia Booker, Sharon Boykins and Dottie Chavers.”

“Aggies Fall To Milton 28 to 7: The Evergreen Aggies dropped their homecoming game to the Milton, Fla. Panthers. Milton, one of the powers of the Alabama-Florida league, fielded a very strong team. They held the Aggies scoreless until the last quarter when Robert Ellington went over from the three while scoring four TDs themselves. Wayne Frazier turned out his usual fine performance for the Aggies while being aided defensively by Paul Pace, Bert Cook, George Bolton and many others.”

“Aggies Face Old Rival T.R. Miller Tigers In Brewton Friday Nite: Without any let up from a rugged schedule and the constant presence of an injury jinx, Coach Wendell Hart’s ‘Cripples’ will limp to Brewton to do battle with arch-rival T.R. Miller this Friday night.
“Miller, once a mighty power in South Alabama football, but one of the lesser lights for the past several seasons, has returned to a prominent position with an outstanding record this season. They will rule as a definite favorite due to comparative records of the two teams. Miller handed Frisco City their first defeat of the season, 14-7, a few weeks back, and Frisco in turn walloped the Aggies to the tune of 28-13, which makes Miller mathematically a 22-point favorite over the Aggies.
“However, past records mean little or nothing when these two ancient rivals meet and an upset has often been the result. Miller usually feels that it is a successful season when they beat Evergreen and the Aggies had probably rather take Miller than any other opponent except the Greenville Tigers.”

“It Takes Teamwork In LAW ENFORCEMENT, Too: BEHIND the record of every great football 11 you’ll find charging linesmen and blocking backs. THAT’S WHY the brewing industry is running interference for Alabama’s aggressive ABC Board in its drive to keep all retail beer outlets clean and inviting. That’s teamwork, too.
“But you, the public, can do more than sit in the grandstand. WE WANT YOU TO PLAY ON THE TEAM.
“Do this by reporting ‘offside’ retailers to our Committee and confine your patronage to reputable outlets when you drink beer – the beverage of moderation.
“BREWERS AND ALABAMA BEER DISTRIBUTORS COMMITTEE, David E. Dunn, State Director, 215 Gunter Building, Montgomery, Ala., Published In Cooperation With The United Brewers Industrial Foundation.”

“Ira Williams – member of Walker Board of Revenue – is a great hunter and mounts many of his trophies. He has deer heads, a fox, squirrels, owls, hawks, crows and many other specimens.”
