From “Wright Angles” by Artie
Wright – “I think I’ve done pretty good this year. So far I kept my comments
about Auburn to a minimum. No crude jokes or anti-Dye comments.
“So far this year, no one has
called in to cancel their subscription because of comments like I made last
year. Plenty of people have asked me why I changed. I guess it had a lot to do
with Maurice’s peace of mind and physical well being. Auburn fans took things I
said to heart last year more than I thought they would.
“Well, it’s almost that time
of the year again. Next Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, Alabama and Auburn will
square off in Birmingham. At stake is Alabama’s number two ranking in the
nation and the possibility of playing for the national title against Miami in
the Sugar Bowl (that is if the Tide can win the first SEC championship game
against either Florida or Georgia on Dec. 5.)
“The Tigers, who will be
spending the Christmas and New Year’s holidays with family and friends, will be
trying to salvage a season filled with controversy and disappointment. A win
over Alabama may call off the dogs long enough for Pat Dye to take a breath.
Another loss would be just another strike against the coach who has to feel
that the entire world is against him.
“Hopefully on this
Thanksgiving Day, Alabama and Auburn fans will be able to sit down and enjoy an
evenly matched, friend against friend, football contest. When the dust has
settled, maybe each respective side can join hands with each other in
friendship and celebrate as one, giving thanks for the blessings of the past
year.”

“Repton High advances in playoffs: Repton High School
Quarterback Donnie Reed scored on touchdown and passed for another in leading
the Bulldogs to a 21-7 victory over Sweet Water in the first round of the Class
A high school playoffs Friday night in Monroeville.
“The Bulldogs, now 11-0 for the season, play Brantley
High in Brantley tomorrow night.”
Other Repton players in the Sweet Water game included
Reggie Bonds, Steve Harris, Fred Rudolph and Trey Wilson.
“Mayor O.B. ‘Bert’ Tuggle signs the proclamation
proclaiming this Saturday, Nov. 19, as ‘Clint Jackson Day’ in Evergreen as
officers and directors of the Conecuh County Branch of the NAACP look on: James
A. Powell, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. O.F. Frazier, Richard Rabb, Mrs. Edith Gray,
Professor O.F. Frazier, Larry Fluker, Chapter President, and Jerome Gray.”
“Saturday is ‘Clint Jackson Day’ here, and according to
the Conecuh County Branch of the NAACP which has coordinated plans and
arrangements, it is shaping up as a ‘knockout.’
“Clint Jackson is the first person from Evergreen and
Conecuh County to ever be a member of the U.S. Olympic Team, having fought as a
welterweight in 1976 in Montreal. In addition, he has and still hold AAU
national titles.”

“Barbara Stinson, ‘Miss
Homecoming,’ and Brenda Ellis, ‘Miss Football,’ were the reigning royalty at
Evergreen High School during the annual homecoming held recently. Barbara was
chosen by the student body, and Brenda by the football team. Both are members
of the senior class and both are cheerleaders.”
“Kindig Is Chosen ‘Back of
Week’: Butch Kindig of Graceville was recently chosen as ‘Back of the Week’ by
The Pensacola Journal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Kindig of
Graceville, and his father is a native of Evergreen.
“Here is what the Pensacola
newspaper had to say about young Kindig: ‘Kindig was picked for his work in
leading the Graceville Tigers to a 19-6 triumph over Donalsonville, Ga.
“Though slight of build
(5-10, 145 pounds), Kindig’s influence on the game was anything but slight.
“He ran the ball 15 times
from scrimmage for 102 yards, scored one touchdown from four yards out after
setting it up with a 40-yard run and set up another on a 51-yard punt return.
“In nominating Kindig,
Graceville Coach Homer Underwood wrote, ‘He sparked both touchdown drives in
the last quarter after Donalsonville had tied the score, 6-6, in the third
period.’
“Kindig contributed to the
victory defensively too, intercepting two passes. He returned one of them 26
yards.”
“Miss Gayle Ryland was
crowned queen at homecoming festivities recently at Repton High School. She and
her attendants were featured in a parade during the afternoon when the high
school band also participated.”

“Aggies Wallop Camden For
Sixth Win, 34-0: Paced by the flying feet of Glenn McIntyre, the Evergreen High
Aggies romped to a 34-0 decision over a fighting, but overmatched Wilcox County
High 11 here last Friday night. The Aggies put on a display of high-geared
offensive football before a small crowd on a slightly muddy field to take their
sixth win of the season.
“Glenn McIntyre returned the
second half kickoff 85 yards and a few plays later went 80 yards off right
tackle for another score to provide thrills a plenty for the partisan home
crowd.”
Other outstanding players in
that game included Billy Mudge Lee, Mickey Logue and Bobby White.
“Evergreen-Brewton Tilt
Feature Of Big Homecoming Celebration At EHS: The Aggies of Evergreen High will
do battle with the Tigers of T.R. Miller High of Brewton here Friday night in
Brooks Stadium. The football game will be the feature event in a huge
homecoming celebration at the local school. The teams would like to mark up a
victory in this game that ends the season for both schools. Pre-game
formalities will get underway with the presentation of corsages to the sponsors
of the game at 7:30 p.m., the kickoff will follow.
“Johnny Nielsen, Billy Pierce
and Bobby Johnson will be in the press booth to give a play-by-play description
of the game over the public address system.
“The invading Tigers of T.R.
Miller High School will be favorites to cop the game by a narrow margin.
“(Evergreen Coach Wendell)
Hart has one of the better defensive teams in the state. The Aggies have given
up only two touchdowns this season.”

“Alabama Plays Navy At
Pensacola Nov. 19: Pensacola, Nov. 10 – Because of the acclamation with which
the people of Northwest Florida and Southern Alabama last season received a
game between the Navy and the University of Alabama, a second game between the
two teams has been arranged for Pensacola on Nov. 19.
“Last fall, to experiment,
the city of Pensacola, by the cooperative effort of those interested staged a
game between the ‘B’ squad of the Alabama and the Navy here. The result was so
gratifying that it was decided to stage the game annually between the two teams
in order to provide a grade of football equal to that provided in collegiate
games in the south for the people of Northwest Florida and Southern Alabama,
most of whom were unable to attend college games.
“Last year, the Crimson Tide
brought to Pensacola, a team built around ‘Bat’ Ballini, through whose
individual efforts the Navy team was forced to take the short end of a 20 to 0
score.
“This year, the Navy will
present a team of stars that its coach, Lt. DuBurg, former Annapolis star,
believes is capable of coping with the best the Tuscaloosa institution has to
offer.
“Hank Crisp of Alabama has
promised that he will bring to Pensacola for the game one of the strongest
teams that has left the Tuscaloosa campus for a non-major game in recent years.
“Tickets for the game are now
being sold in Pensacola and indications are that one of the largest crowds ever
to assemble in the city for an athletic event will be present.”
