Local football fans have 10 college football bowl games to
look forward to between now and next Thursday.
Five games are scheduled for Saturday with three to follow
on Monday. Two games are set for this coming Wednesday. Here’s how I see those
games coming out.
On Saturday at 10 a.m., Nevada will play Louisiana-Lafayette
in the New Orleans Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans (ESPN). This should be
a good close game, but I look for Louisiana-Lafayette to squeak by Nevada in
the end.
At 12:30 p.m., Colorado State will play Utah in the Las
Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas (ABC). This should be another good,
close game, but with Colorado State without its regular head coach, I expect
Utah to edge out CSU.
At 1:20 p.m., UTEP will face Utah State in the New Mexico
Bowl at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M. (ESPN). This game probably
won’t be as close as the first two. In fact, don’t be surprised if Utah State
wins by double digits.
At 2:45 p.m., Western Michigan will play Air Force in the
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho (ESPN). No one likes
to pull against one of our service academies, but I look for Western Michigan
to win this one.
At 8:15 p.m., Bowling Green will play South Alabama in the
Camellia Bowl at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery (ESPN). This will also probably be
a good game as well, and I think USA will edge out Bowling Green.
The first game on Monday is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
and will feature BYU and Memphis in the Miami Beach Bowl at Marlins Park in
Miami (ESPN). This may be the closest game of the day, and even though this one
could go either way, I look for Memphis to win – barely.
At 5 p.m., Marshall will play Northern Illinois in the Boca
Raton Bowl at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. (ESPN). This one may be close for
a little while, but it won’t last long. Look for Marshall to win by double
digits.
At 8:30 p.m., Navy will play San Diego State in the
Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego (ESPN). Despite their win over
Army, San Diego State will be more than Navy can handle.
On Wednesday, Christmas Eve viewers will have two somewhat
interesting games to watch while waiting for Santa to show up.
At 11 a.m., Western Kentucky will play Central Michigan in
the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl at Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas (ESPN).
To me, this is another toss up, and I look for Western Kentucky to win. Should
be about as interesting as watching two spiders fight in the bottom of a Mason
jar.
At 7 p.m., Rice will play Fresno State at Hawaii Bowl at
Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii (ESPN). This might actually be a pretty good
game, and I expect Rice to pull it out in a close one.
