“Woman’s Death Believed To
Have Been Suicide: According to the best information available, it is believed
by investigating officers that Martha Atwater, age 51, well known woman,
committed suicide by stepping in front of a fast moving southbound train some
time Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The mangled body was discovered
early Sunday morning and an investigation was begun immediately by Sheriff W.A.
Moore and other officers. The fatal accident occurred under the viaduct just
north of the business section.
“So far as officers have
learned, Martha was last seen alive about 10 or 11 o’clock Saturday night when
she left where two of her sisters lived to go to her home next door, telling
them she was going home and go to bed. Near where the mangled body was found,
the victim’s winter coat was found draped over the concrete buffer brace of the
viaduct.
“Foul play was suspected at first
by investigating officers and Nelson Grubbs, state toxicologist from Mobile,
was summoned by Sheriff Moore to assist in the investigation. Mr. Grubbs
reported his examination revealed the woman to have been in an emotionally
