Weather reporter Earl Windham
reported .04 inches of rain in Evergreen on Jan. 10. He also reported highs of
71 degrees on Jan. 10 and Jan. 15. He reported a low of 23 degrees on Jan. 13.
“There was a lot of
‘swearing’ going on at the Conecuh County Courthouse Monday morning as Judge of
Probate Frank T. Salter administered the oath of office to county officials.
The judge did some swearing of his own also Monday morning as he was administered
the oath of office by District Judge Sue Bell.”
New Conecuh County
commissioners taking oaths for their first terms in office included Percy
Salter, Jerold Dean, C.W. Salter and Freddie Stallworth, the first black
elected to the commission. Probate Judge Frank T. Salter was entering his
fourth term in office. District Judge Sue A. Bell and Circuit Clerk Jean E.
Ralls were beginning their first full terms in office. Coroner Danny Garnett
was beginning his first term in office.
“The Evergreen Chamber of
Commerce’s annual Promotion Banquet will be held Friday night at seven o’clock
at the historic old L&N Railroad Depot, owned by the Murder Creek
Historical Society.
“Dr. Stanley Wilson, Vice
President for Agriculture, Home Economics and Veterinary Science at Auburn
University, will be the guest speaker for the evening.”
“Conecuh County’s Jr. Miss,
Missy Price, will be competing in the 1983 Alabama Junior Miss Pageant this
weekend in Montgomery. The preliminaries will be held Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
and Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Finals will be Saturday night at 8 p.m. All
productions will be in Montgomery’s Lee High School auditorium."

“City accepts low bid on new
city building: Evergreen’s dream of a new city hall moved one step closer to
reality Tuesday afternoon. A low bid of $162,922 (base bid) by Clark Hardware
Co., Inc. of Red Level was accepted by the city council at the 2 p.m. opening.
The project is to take 240 days.
“Construction will probably
get underway in 45 to 60 days.”
“Mrs. W.F. Cobb, who is
probably Evergreen’s senior citizen, observed her 102nd birthday last Thursday,
Jan. 11. Mrs. Cobb, nee Estelle Bryant, was married to the late Dr. William
Foster Cobb in 1895 in Barlow Bend. They lived there until they moved to Frisco
City in 1916. Dr. Cobb practiced medicine in Clarke and Monroe counties for 50
years. Mrs. Cobb has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. (T.W. and Lucille) Dunn
since 1959. She is a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and graduated from
Alabama Conference Female College (now Huntingdon College, Montgomery) in 1888
when it was located at Tuskegee.”
“USS Long Beach – Seaman
Milton L. Hardee, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Hardee of Rt. 1,
Evergreen, and husband of the former Miss Susan L. Benton of Sanford, Fla.,
participated in ‘Bead Stringer’ as a crew member aboard the nuclear-powered
guided missile cruiser, USS Long Beach. ‘Bead Stringer,’ a U.S. First Fleet
training exercise, was held off the coast of Southern California and lasted
from Jan. 4 through the 13th.”

Historical Markers To Be
Erected Soon: Nine historical markers will be erected and dedicated in Alabama
within the next two weeks by the Alabama Historical Association, reports Rucker
Agee, Marker Chairman.
“Six will be dedicated in
Butler County on Jan. 24 and three in Autauga County on Jan. 28.
“The markers will be erected
in memory of the Creek Indian Confederacy, Fort Bibb, the Butler Massacre, the
Ogly Massacre, Gary’s Stockade and Fort Dale in Butler County and the Pratt Gin
Factory, Albert J. Pickett and Alibamo Indians in Autauga County.”
“Conecuh Cattlemen Elect Bill
Cardwell At Meeting Friday: M.M. (Bill) Cardwell was elevated to the presidency
of the Conecuh Cattlemen’s Association at the organization’s annual meeting
last Friday. The meeting was held at the Evergreen Community House with a good
attendance of Conecuh County cattle producers present.
“Mr. Cardwell succeeds Howard
Dees as president of the group. He had previously served as vice president
during 1952 before becoming the association’s third president. C.E. Robinson
was the first president.
“Other officers elected
include the following: Vice-President Carl M. Stacey, Secretary M.H. Huggins
and Treasurer Rutland Rowe (re-elected) and members of the board of directors,
Howard Dees (State Association Director), H.S. Barrow, Melvin Johnson, C.E.
Robinson and Hugh Brown.”

“Repton Physician Dies After
Long Illness: Dr. Walter B. Moorer, respected physician of Repton, died at his
home Sunday night at nine o’clock from heart ailment.
“Dr. Moorer was a native of
Lowndes County, Ala. He received his early education in the schools of that
county and completed his medical course at Birmingham Medical College. For a
number of years he practiced his profession at McKenzie moving from there to
Repton more than 20 years ago, where he had since lived and practiced.”
“J. Greely Moore, present
deputy Sheriff and former Sheriff, qualified this week as a candidate for Sheriff
in the forthcoming primary election.”
“State Representative Forrest
Castleberry said Wednesday he would be a candidate for re-election in the May
and June primaries. He is now serving his first term, having been elected in
1934.”
“Following a long period of
ill health, Dr. Charles Edward Chapman, age 60, died at his home in Mobile
Saturday morning at 6:45 o’clock. Dr. Chapman was a native of Evergreen, but
had lived in Mobile since 1896 at which time he entered the Mobile Medical
College from which he later graduated. After completing his medical course he
began the practice of his profession in Mobile and continued as long as his
health permitted. Dr. Chapman was a member of Garland Lodge No. 684,
A.F.&A.M. of Garland, Ala.”

JAN. 17, 1923
“The formal induction into
office of A.M. Barfield as sheriff and W.S. Dreaden as circuit clerk, and A.E.
Johnson and C.C. Gaston, members of commissioners court, on last Monday morning
marked the only changes in the official family of the county. Judge Dunn took
the usual oath hand and began his second term as probate judge. W.A. Moore of
Beat 8 will be Sheriff Barfield’s chief deputy.”

“A fire in the home of W.H.
Kelly on Monday was quickly extinguished by the prompt and effective work of
Chief Gafford. The fire caught from the woodwork around the fire place and
would have resulted in serious loss had it continued a few minutes longer.”
