“Gym almost ready at
Castleberry: The new $84,500 gymnasium at Castleberry received its finishing
touches and final inspection this week, it is announced today by Guy S. Kelly,
Superintendent of Education for Conecuh County Public Schools.
“In the above picture, Coach
Wayne Pope is wearing that ‘victory grin’ as he sees the painters putting on
the last touches. He hopes the gym will enable him to see his boys through a
larger percentage of victories in inter-school competition from now on. The
school auditorium is the only gym area available heretofore.
“An all fireproof building,
financed from the State Building Fund, the Castleberry gym is listed as the
most modern with the best facilities in this county and this entire area.
“The up-to-date glassed front
entrance opens into a long spacious lobby with a snack bar at one end and
restrooms at the other. Doors from the lobby also open into the gym area, girls
dressing rooms and a side entrance.
“The 98x75-foot gym area is
floored with 1-1/2 inch pecan and lighted with 24 skylights and 32 500-watt
bulbs. In daytime, the skylights provide ample lighting even in cloudy weather.
This will be a tremendous electrical savings, the coach said.
“No windows are in the gym,
but two 48-inch exhaust fans pull an ample supply of air through for
ventilation and comfort. It is heated with gas heat.
“The gym floor consists of
one regulation basketball court and two cross courts. To one side are five
sections of rolling gym seats that can be easily rolled in or out by one man.
They are designed to seat 500 people.
“The boys and girls dressing
rooms each consist of shower rooms, private offices and restrooms for the
instructors, locker space, ample area for classroom instruction, and chained
off storage room for physical education equipment.
“Some recreation equipment
has been provided by the town of Castleberry. Coach Pope said he would provide
a full program of summer recreation for the young folks in Castleberry with free
swimming lessons beginning some time in June.
“Pope said with the
construction of the gym facilities has come a marked boost of morale among the
entire student body. He said this has been recognized by all the teachers in
every area of the student activities including their studies.
“The building was constructed
by Hines Realty Co. of Brewton. M.C. Thomasson is the principal of the
Castleberry School.”
“Aggies Are Champs Of Rebel
Conference: The Evergreen Aggies captured the Rebel Conference crown Wednesday
afternoon in Flomaton by whipping the Hurricanes, 8-7, in nine innings.
“Frank Pugh went six innings
for the Aggies but Leon Stinson was credited with the victory as a reliever.
Knowles went all the way and absorbed the loss for the home crew.
“The Aggies scored seven runs
in the first two frames, but the Hurricanes came back with four in the fourth
and tied it in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
“Ronnie Bolton walked to lead
off the visitors’ ninth and Stinson hit a tremendous two-out triple to deep
right field to provide the winning margin.”
“Whippets-Aggies: The Frisco
City Whippets took their second win over the Evergreen Aggies Thursday night in
Evergreen by the score of 8-2. Rodney Dunn hurled a one-hitter for the victors,
recording nine strikeouts.
“Frank Pugh was the loser as
Leon Stinson and Jimmy Weaver worked relief stints for the Aggies.
“The Whippets got five runs
in the initial frame was a bases-loaded triple by Sawyer, being the key blow.
“The visitors, who played
errorless ball for five innings, were guilty of four miscues in the sixth.
Those, along with Billy Melton’s single, managed to get two Aggies runs across
the plate.”
