From “Chapter XXVIII: The County of Conecuh” in “Alabama:
Her History, Resources, War Record and Public Men From 1540 to 1872” by Willis
Brewer:
The late William A. Ashley was a native of this county, and
the son of Hon. Wilson Ashley, who served Conecuh in the legislature, and was
presidential elector for Messrs. Davis and Stephens in 1861. His mother was Miss
McCreary. The son had good educational advantages, and gave his attention to
planting.
He took an interest in the construction and management of
the Mobile & Montgomery Railroad. He represented the county in both
branches of the general assembly, but died in the meridian of life, in April
1870, aged about 48 years. He possessed popular manners, and a wide range of
information, but was reserved and not opinionated.
