“Loree Cops Two Wins; Bermuda
Blasts Paul: The Loree Dollies had on their hitting clothes Sunday as they
pounded out a double win over the Centerville Rookies, 10-5 and 17-0. The games
were played on the Centerville field. ‘Check’ Ellis chalked up both wins as he
played ‘iron man’ and pitched both ends of the doubleheader for the Dollies. He
whiffed 27 batters in the two games.
“The wins were Loree’s first
in the newly re-organized Conecuh Amateur League.
“Over at Bermuda, the Bears
blasted the Paul Aces by a terrific 22 to 2 margin. The Bears sprayed base hits
all over the park, including two home run shots as they pounded out their
second straight Conecuh Amateur League win.
“Allen Thompson was on the
mound for Bermuda and had the game under control all the way. His batterymate
was George Wayne Watson. Harold Godwin started for Paul and was followed by two
other hurlers, none of whom could quiet the Bear bats. Joe McLain was the
receiver.”

“Merchants Win Pair From Brewton
Millers: The local entry in the South Alabama League is still at the top of the
heap on the strength of two wins over the fast Brewton nine. Playing good ball
and living up to their reputation of being a great offensive club, the
Merchants won Thursday, 4-1, and Sunday, 7-6.
“The first game was won
easily behind the three-hit pitching of Ripper Williams, who fanned 10 and
issued only one base on balls. The collegian’s first game with Evergreen was a
masterpiece which should have been a shutout except for a fluke home run. The
locals garnered two runs in the first on Barfield’s single followed by Sam
Jones hit who scored on Melton’s fly back up against the right field wall.
“In the sixth, with two men
away, three straight hits pushed another tally across the pan. One more run was
scored in the eighth on one hit, a stolen base and another hit. This ended the
Merchants scoring and made the final score four to Brewton’s one, which had
been scored on a pop fly back of first, which was lost in the grass.”
“Sunday found Evergreen eking
out a 7-6 win in the ninth frame here at Gantt field. Brewton started going in
the first inning and counted twice on three solid base hits and one free ride.
The Merchants came back in the same inning and showed the fans what a batting
attack looks like. Seven men faced McDonald in this frame and five of them
smashed out bingles to score four runs. In the second inning after the first
two Evergreen sluggers had hit safely the southpaw was pulled in favor of
Nichols former Andalusia twirler. Over the stretch of seven innings, the tall
lad allowed the local nine only seven hits only to see his game lost in the
ninth. In this period with the score tied Binion lined a blow to left for one
base. He swiped second and remained there while Harper flied out and Seabrooks
reached first on the Brewton receiver’s miscue. On a double steal in which the
Brewton catcher attempted to get Seabrooks at second, Binion after stealing
third, scored the winning marker. The batting of Barfield and Binion with the
latter’s speed on the paths was a highlight of the game which for the most part
was slow and uninteresting throughout.”
“Evergreen plays the Atmore
Oilers here Thursday and in Atmore Sunday. Ripper Williams will hurl the game
