100-year-old news highlights from The Monroe Journal newspaper

What follows are 100-year-old news excerpts from the Jan. 16, 1919 edition of The Monroe Journal newspaper in Monroe County, Ala.

Mr. E.T. Millsap returned to Monroeville Tuesday, having received his discharge from the army.

Marshall Fountain rounded up several “skinners” last week and they were caused to appear before Mayor J.D. Ratcliffe on Monday morning at which time they added several dollars to the tow treasury.

Death of Capt. C.M. Marriott: Capt. C.M. Marriott died in Mobile last Thursday, following an attack of influenza. Capt. Marriott was an old resident of Monroe County and had many friends in this section who will learn of his death with regret. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. King, and two sons, Messrs. C.T. and H.R. Marriott. The funeral occurred at the family burying ground at Homewood.

MONROE COUNTY MAY GET GERMAN CANNON: The Journal is in receipt of the following telegram from Hon. O.L. Gray dated Jan. 11, 1919:
It may be of interest to you and your patrons to learn that I have introduced the following bill in the House:
H.R. 13999. In the House of Representatives, Jan. 9, 1919, Mr. Gray of Alabama introduced the following bill which was referred to the committee on Military Affairs and ordered to be printed, authorizing the Secretary of War to donate to the county of Monroe, Alabama, two German cannon or field pieces:
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled that the Secretary of War is hereby authorized and directed to donate to the county of Monroe, Alabama, two cannon or field pieces captured by the American Army from the Imperial German Government during the present war. – OSCAR L. GRAY.

E.R. Morrissett is confined to his room with influenza.

Mr. Theo. Massey, who has been visiting relatives here for a few days, returned to Washington, D.C., where he has a responsible position.

Messrs. W.R. Blackwell and W.A. Castillow of Roy were pleasant callers at this office while in Monroeville the first of the week.

Miss Lillian Deer entertained a few of her friends at her home at Claiborne on Tuesday evening. Misses Maude Yarbrough, Sarah Slaughter of Monroeville and Mr. Hampton Henderson of Drewry were present on this enjoyable occasion.

The annual meeting of stockholders of the Bank of Monroeville has held on Jan. 9 and the following officers and directors elected for the ensuring year, viz: James K. Kyser, president; A.C. Lee, vice president; John M. Coxwell, cashier; A.R. Boroughs, assistant cashier; Directors: W.M. Newton and C.P. Deming, Evergreen; R.B. Williams, Finchburg; Riley Kelly, Excel; Carl Hixon, Hixon; B.H. Stallworth and A.C. Lee, Monroeville.

Services at Baptist Church: Rev. J.T. Brock of Thomasville, Ala., will visit the Monroeville-Beatrice field, Sunday, Jan. 19, preaching at Monroeville at 11 a.m. and at Beatrice at 7 p.m. We hope he will be greeted by a large congregation at Monroeville.
