The NFL playoffs will continue this weekend with the
Divisional Round of games set to be played on Saturday and Sunday. On the AFC
side of the bracket, I look for Kansas City to beat the Indianapolis Colts on
Saturday and for the Patriots to beat the Chargers on Sunday. On the NFC side,
I look for the Rams to beat the Cowboys on Saturday and for the Saints to beat the
Eagles on Sunday.
New Orleans is the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and they are my
pick to win it all. They’ll have to win two more games to the get to the Super
Bowl, which will be played Feb. 3 in Atlanta.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees will turn 40 this coming
Tuesday, and I figure he’ll likely retire if the Saints win it all this year.
He’s had a heck of a career, and there’s no better way to finish than when
you’re on top.

Before you know it, it’ll be baseball season again. Out of
curiosity, I looked earlier this week and discovered that as of Monday, we had
79 days left until Opening Day. This year, Major League Baseball will play its
Opening Day slate of games on March 28. It’ll be here before you know it.

High school basketball is back in full swing now that the
holidays are over and we’ve flipped the calendar over to January. Hillcrest’s
varsity boys picked up where they left off and are continuing to steamroll
opponents. I watched them against J.F. Shields on Friday night, and I was
impressed by how much bigger Hillcrest’s team was compared to Shields.
Prior to the start of that game, I watched Hillcrest’s girls
win their first game of the year. Hillcrest’s girls have improved a lot this
season, and it showed on Friday night. Instead of giving up, they continued to
play hard and beat Shields in their own house.
Hillcrest’s girls may be young, but you wouldn’t know it by
the way they played on Friday. And Shields doesn’t have a bad team. They are a
traditional power in 1A girls basketball and were among the teams nominated for
the 1A girls poll on Dec. 19.
Sparta’s varsity girls are also continuing to roll right on
along. They stumbled against a pair of ranked teams as December came to a
close, but they rebounded on Friday night by beating Meadowview badly. If
nothing changes, I’ll be shocked if Sparta doesn’t win their region this
season.
Like Hillcrest’s girls, Sparta’s varsity boys are also
continuing to improve. Jace Daniels is their biggest weapon this season,
recording more double doubles this season than I’ve seen in a long, long time.
I also look for the Warriors to make some noise when it comes to region
tournament time.
As odd as it sounds, we’ve got less than a month of regular
season high school basketball left. Hillcrest and Sparta will both wrap up
their regular season schedules on Feb. 1, which is just about three weeks away.
