weather observer Harry Ellis reported 0.01 inches of rain on Jan. 9, 0.02
inches on Jan. 10, 0.04 inches on Jan. 11 and 1.03 inches on Jan. 13. He
reported a high of 71 degrees on Jan. 10 and lows of 30 on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15.
Tornado devastates Belleville: The community of
Belleville, just west of I-65, was devastated last Friday morning when a
tornado ripped through the area leaving
Betty Jo Williams dead. The tornado was spawned out of a severe weather front
that ripped through the region early Friday.
The tornado touched down for only minutes, but left a
path of destruction that was over one-half mile square. It left three homes
destroyed and over 15 structures damaged, including the Belleville Volunteer
Fire Department, and many vehicles damaged.
Williams was killed when the chimney in her home
collapsed.
Scholarship established to honor Judge Kendall:
Friends and fellow members of the Mobile Bar Association have found a way to
honor Evergreen native and longtime Mobile County Judge Robert Gordon (Bobby)
Kendall who lost his battle with cancer in October.
Kendall, who grew up in Evergreen, served as circuit
judge in the 13th Judicial Circuit for more than 20 years. He was
the presiding judge of the circuit at the time of his death.
A group of his friends in Mobile are working to create
a perpetual scholarship at the University of Alabama Law School in his name.

of rain on Jan. 7, 0.46 inches on Jan. 9 and 1.0 inches on Jan. 11. He reported
a high of 68 degrees on Jan. 11 and low of 36 on Jan. 7.
County Junior Miss in state finals: Conecuh County’s
Junior Miss, Cordella Johnson, will represent the county in the state Junior
Miss finals Sat., Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at Lee High School, Montgomery.
Cordella is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Johnson
and crowned Conecuh County’s Junior Miss on Nov. 29, 1979.
She will be involved in numerous activities in the
state’s capital this week, including a luncheon with Mrs. Lillian Carter, the
mother of Jimmy Carter.
The Conecuh County Cattlemen and CowBelles will hold
their annual banquet this Friday night at seven o’clock at the Holiday Inn.
The State Association will be represented by President
Milton “Buzz” Wendland of Autaugaville.
The featured speaker will be Robert Vaughn of Ozark.
Vaughn is a highly sought humorous speaker who is guaranteed to give audiences
lots of laughs along with some important matters upon which to think.
The Murder Creek Historical Society announces today
that it will have a “flea market” sale at the historic L&N Depot in
Evergreen on Sat., Feb. 2.
The Murder Creek Historical Society is making final
plans to “really fix up the old depot.” Any items contributed to the society
for the flea market sale will be appreciated.

Ansley Stationed At Pusan, Korea: PUSAN, Korea – Specialist Third Class James A.
Ansley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zell Ansley, 306 Perryman St., Evergreen, Ala., is
assigned to the 8225th Army Unit’s Military Police Security
Detachment in Pusan, Korea.
Spec. Ansley, a veteran of 29 months of Army duty,
arrived in the Far East in February 1955, from an assignment at Fort Huachuca,
Ariz.
He is a 1953 graduate of Evergreen High School.
Beloved Local Lady Passes Sunday: Following an illness
of many months, Mrs. Emma Lavert Dickey, age 75, passed at 12:15 p.m. Sun.,
Jan. 15, at her home on Main Street.
Mrs. Dickey was born and reared in Luverne. Before her
marriage to the late G.O. Dickey, she was Miss Emma Lavert Pace, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Pace. Mr. Dickey passed away about four years ago.
Mrs. Dickey moved with her husband to Evergreen in
1919 and had lived here since. She had one daughter, Mrs. R.G. Bozeman Sr., who
passed away in 1940.
She is survived by five grandchildren: Mrs. Marshall
Brittain, Evergreen; R.G. Bozeman Jr., Dadeville; Dickey, Pace and Susan
Bozeman, all of Evergreen; two sisters, Mrs. Eunice Rhodes, Montgomery and Mrs.
Bessie Rhodes, Birmingham, also four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from Cope Chapel at 3 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 16, conducted by Rev. Sam Granade and Rev. F.H. Ellington.

Mrs.
G.O. Dickey returned home Sunday after spending the past two weeks in Luverne
on account of the illness of her father, Mr. R.R. Pace.
CAN YOU BEAT THIS BEET? Step right up you farmers and
gardeners and show your big beets. Mr. E.G. Stacey of Skinnerton community is
willing to meet all comers when it comes to champion beets. He holds all
records to date by virtue of having brought a 14-pound beet to this office a
few days ago.
This monster vegetable has attracted much attention
from passersby in the window of The Courant office this week. Mr. Stacey states
that the soil in this vicinity is capable of producing the best in all crops
and he offers this beet as conclusive evidence.
Lions To Broadcast From Station WSFA: Evergreen Lions
Club has accepted an invitation to present a program from Station WSFA
Montgomery Sun., Jan. 25, from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The courtesy was extended
the club through a letter from Mr. M.L. Black of Black Decorating Co. to Mr.
W.W. Kingsbery of this city.
Plans are already under way to arrange a program for
the occasion. Lion President J.L. Kelly, W.W. Kingsbery and R.G. Bozeman from
the committee to arrange the program.
Two cars of hogs, 274 head weighing a total of 45,240
pounds were sold in the cooperative sale held here Tuesday by the Conecuh
Livestock Association for the sum of $2,756.95, according to information
furnished by County Agent P.R. Pettis.

At a meeting of Camp Capt.
Wm. Lee, U.C.V., No. 328, held on Monday, Dr. P.M. Bruner was elected
commander; Chas. G. Russell, first lieutenant commander; N.T. Dean, second
lieutenant commander; N. Stallworth, adjutant; M.A. Gantt, sergeant major. H.M.
King, G.R. Boulware, John P. Anderson were elected delegates to the reunion at
New Orleans. W.L. Stallworth, Thos. S. Hagood and Jas. C. Travis were elected
alternate delegates.

Notice Veterans: I am advised
that Col. J.M. Falkner Chapter U.D.C. will hold a public meeting at the
courthouse on Friday evening, Jan. 19, at 7:30 o’clock, commemorating the
birthday of Gen. Robert E. Lee at which time crosses of honor will be presented
to all veterans entitled thereto. I earnestly request all veterans of Camp
Capt. Wm. Lee to be present to receive these crosses. P.M. Bruner, Commander.
On the evening of Jan. 19th
at 7:30 o’clock at the courthouse, Gen. R.E. Lee’s birthday will be celebrated
with appropriate exercises by the local chapter United Daughters of the
Confederacy. At this time, Crosses of Honor will be bestowed upon all veterans
holding certificates of eligibility. A small fee of admission, 25 cents for
adults and 15 cents for children, will be charged, for benefit of Soldiers’
Home at Mountain Creek. All veterans receiving Crosses of Honor will be
admitted free.
