Calhoun wants to field semi-pro team: Victor Calhoun, who moved to Evergreen recently from Detroit, announced this week that a plan is in the works to field a minor league football team that will compete in one of two established semi-professional leagues.
He said the team, which will consist of players from Conecuh, Monroe, Escambia, Butler, Covington and other surrounding counties, will probably participate in the North American Football League (NAFL) or the Southern States Football League (SSFL).
Calhoun said he is a native of Jacksonville, Fla. and once played outside linebacker for the St. Louis Cardinals professional football team. He said he helped organize and coach a minor league team in Detroit.
Calhoun said negotiations are under way with Conecuh County School Board officials to use the facilities at Hillcrest High School to hold the games at Jaguar Stadium.
Calhoun said the team will be called the Evergreen Jaguars and will play a 10-game schedule. He said games would be played each Saturday at 7 p.m.
Calhoun added that the organization is non-profit the players will not be paid, which would make them eligible to compete at the college level if they’re given the chance.
Calhoun noted that both college and pro scouts attend minor league football games on a regular basis, looking for players who they think have a chance to play college or professional ball.
He said the team will hold a mini-camp in the next few weeks.

Evergreen Aggies Take Win Over Greenville, Lost To Georgiana: The Evergreen Aggies threw the Greenville Tigers 59-48 for their first loss Friday night, and Georgiana stopped the Aggies’ win streak Tuesday, 54-49.
The Aggies jumped to a quick lead in the game against Greenville, and the score with about five minutes of the first quarter gone was 10-1. At the end of the first quarter, the Aggies led 18-4 and increased that lead to 40-18 in the second period.
Randy White, big Evergreen center, couldn’t miss, as he hit almost every shot, scoring 28 points in the first half. The ball was worked in well, and it looked as if the Aggies could win the game by any score they chose.
In the second half, the Tigers came roaring back, and the Aggies seemed confused by the zone defense the Tigers threw up. The Aggies could get only nine points in the third quarter, while the Tigers got 13. In the fourth quarter, the Aggies fared little better, with the Tigers pulling closer and closer, at one time narrowing the margin to five points. A late spurt on the part of the Aggies enabled them to win by 11 points, however, and the final score was Evergreen 59, Greenville 48.
Randy White scored more than 2/3 of the Aggies’ points, with an amazing total of 40 for the night. Eddie Kelly got eight, Robert King got seven, and Carrier and Joyner, two each.
Georgiana stopped the Aggies win streak at eight straight, winning Tuesday night, 54-49. Randy White was held to only 19 points, for his lowest total of the season, by a tight defense that kept the Aggies behind all the way.
White scored 19 for the Aggies, followed by Robert King with nine, Eddie Kelly with eight, Wendell Tolbert with six and Mickey Joyner with seven.
