Baggett make all-state football team: Sparta Academy’s Cody Baggett and Nick
Andrews have both been named to this year’s Alabama Sports Writers Association
high school football all-state team.
Baggett, a 6-foot-0, 180-pound senior, was named as an
AISA honorable mention wide receiver. Andrews, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior,
was named as an AISA honorable mention place-kicker.
Hillcrest High School’s Charlotte Maye scored in double
digits to lead the Lady Jags in the opening game of this year’s Capital City
Conference Christmas Basketball Tournament.
Maye, a senior, scored a team-high 20 points to lead
the Lady Jags in a 63-54 loss to Saint James High School of Montgomery on
Saturday.
Hillcrest’s Kawanis Thomas,
also a senior, was the only other Lady Jag to score in double figures She
finished the game with 18 points.
Sparta Academy senior D.J.
Buckhault led the Warriors in scoring during a pair of games in this year’s
Montgomery Basketball Classic.
In a second-round game that
tipped off Monday at 8 a.m., Buckhault led the Warriors with a team-high 20
points, six rebounds and two steals in a 63-48 loss to Morgan Academy.
Buckhault scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in a 57-29 opening
round loss to Lee-Scott Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Sparta
cagers male and female beat Hooper Academy: Sparta Academy’s varsity basketball
teams, boys and girls, defeated Hooper Academy of Montgomery in games played
Wednesday night, Dec. 28, at the Sparta Gymnasium. The teams have a combined
record of 17 wins and five losses, according to Sparta Sports Information
Director Byron Warren Jr.
Jan Coker burned the baskets with 20 points to pace
the Sparta girls to a 43-36 win over their Hooper counterparts. Leah Carrier
and Raye Ann Gall had eight points each; Tina Bybee, five; and Tammy Booker,
two.
Russ Brown fired 29 points to lead the Warriors boys
to a close, 71-69 win over Hooper. Vince Watts had 16 points; Conner Salter,
13; Britt McNeill, six; Danny Reed, four; and Jim Wagstaff, one.
Glenn Padgett killed this big wildcat “almost in my
front yard” on Thursday of last week at his home on Route C. The wildcat
weighed 26 pounds, not a record, but a big wildcat.

Stuart spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Harper in Montgomery and
attended the Blue-Gray football game.

Mickey
Cochrane, star catcher, who was purchased by the Detroit A.L. club from Connie
Mack’s Philadelphia club for $100,000 and made manager of the Tigers for 1934.
