“Official paperwork was filed last Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, in the Circuit Court of Conecuh County by Attorney John G. Ralls Jr. on behalf of Al Etheridge to sue the City of Evergreen and Larry W. Fluker both as the Mayor of Evergreen and also individually in response for his termination several month ago as Executive Director for the Conecuh County Economic Development Authority.
“Etheridge had served as the EDA Director since the resignation of Eric Basinger. Basinger resigned the position several years ago to accept a similar position in Elmore County.
“The suit asserts that Etheridge was wrongfully discharged by Fluker and the City of Evergreen because he was not an employee of the city. It states that he was in fact an employee of the Conecuh County Economic Development Authority.”
“The Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library hosted an author reception and book signing for Kathy McCoy, author of ‘Crossroads: The Early Years of Monroe County,’ on Thurs., Aug. 31, 2006. ‘Crossroads’ is the first-ever written history of Monroe County. It details the county’s history from prehistoric times up to the Reconstruction period. McCoy is pictured with Sherry S. Johnston, genealogist/historian for the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library.”

“Weatherman Harry Ellis reports .02 of an inch of rain on Aug. 26, 1.00 on Aug. 27, .13 on Aug. 30 and .85 on Aug. 31.”
“The Evergreen City Council decided to reject a proposal by the Evergreen-Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce that would have seen Heritage Day festivities moved from downtown Evergreen to Evergreen Municipal Park.”
“Several cases of vandalism were reported in Evergreen and Lyeffion Tuesday morning. Seen above is where someone threw a bottle and a trash can through the windows of the Country Convenience store at Four Points. According to the store manager, nothing appeared to have been taken from the store but a complete inventory was not completed. Cases of vandalism were also reported at Hillcrest High School, Marshall Middle School, Swift Supply and Lyeffion Junior High School. The other cases are being investigated by the Evergreen Police Department.”
“Representative Jimmy Warren presents a State of Alabama flag to Hillcrest High School Principal Ronnie Brogden. The flag will be flown over the high school. Rep. Warren made the presentation last Friday.”
“S&S Sand and Gravel has been fined $25,000 by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for continuing unpermitted discharges from its operations near Lenox in Conecuh County and for failure to comply with requirements of a previous ADEM directive, according to an administrative order issued Aug. 22 by the state environmental agency.”

“Earl Windham reports one ‘dust-settler’ and two traces of rainfall during the week: .04 of an inch on Aug. 25, .18 of an inch on Aug. 26 and .02 of an inch on Aug. 27. Total for the week was only .24, less than 1/4 of an inch.”
From “The Colyum” by Bob Bozeman – “Wiley Salter handed me a copy of an interesting item he ran across recently. It is a statement from ‘Cooper & Mertins’ of Evergreen to “Greening Lodge” and dated, best I could tell, July 21, 1872.
“The statement is for “Burial Expenses, I. Robbins.” Items listed on the statement include casket at $2.50, paid for digging grave $1.50, shirt $2.20, pants $4, 1/2 doz. coffin screws 15 cents and various other items with a total of $1625. Have prices gone up since then… wow!”
“Terry G. Davis, a recent Alabama State University graduate, has been appointed to serve as Legal Research Analyst for the Department of Court Management, Alabama Supreme Court.
“Appointed by Chief Justice Howell T. Heflin, Davis is the first black to work in an administrative capacity for the Alabama Supreme Court.”
“It was a sad day, Aug. 23, for the ladies of Evergreen Baptist Child Development Center. Lee Wild started to school.
“Lee was the first child to be in Evergreen Baptist Child Development Center. It started in November of 1971. Lee was only 13 months old.”

“Evergreen schools will open for the 1946-47 session Monday morning Sept. 9, according to announcements made this week by the principals.
“The Evergreen High School will hold its opening program beginning at 8:30 a.m., according to Prof. J. Clifford Harper, principal. Parents and others are invited and urged to attend the opening. Mr. Harper assures that they will be through in plenty of time to attend the opening program at the Evergreen City School which begins at 9:15 a.m.
“The faculty at the high school follows: J. Clifford Harper, principal, J.H. Moseley, voc.-ag., Mrs. Sara G.
