“The Conecuh County Commission has named the county’s new agricultural building the David L. Burt Jr. Agriculture Building, honoring the late Mr. Burt who served as chairman of the commission for 10 years and was instrumental in getting the office constructed. The building houses the offices of most of the county’s various county, state and federal agricultural agencies. Commission members are Mrs. Katie Sue Burt, chairman, and Jerold Dean, Woodrow Windham, Percy Salter and Freddie Stallworth and Clerk Wayne Johnston.”
“T.L. Sims, Aubrey Padgett and John Claiborne of the Evergreen City Council were in Washington March 1-3 for a National League of Cities meeting to evaluate and respond to federal policy and budget priorities that will affect cities and towns throughout the country this year.”
“Fernanda Silva Telles, an exchange student from Brazil, recently moved on to Connecticut after spending over two months in Evergreen and attending Evergreen High School. She was the houseguest of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Black, who were her sponsors. She is shown with Wendy Black and Amanda Brooks, president of the Student Government Association at Evergreen High School. Fernanda was presented a plaque commemorating her school days here by the students and faculty at EHS.”

“A tornado struck during the bad weather last Thursday morning and demolished a lumber shed at Conecuh Lumber Co. and damaged other buildings. The loss was estimated at $5,000 to $8,000, but, fortunately, there were no injuries.”
“A tragic accident that shocked this community and county claimed the life of Darin Andrew Gearhart, 10, Sunday afternoon. The youth was killed instantly when he fell from a tractor engaged in bush hogging at Belleville.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Pete Wolff III of Evergreen announce the birth of a son, Pete Wolff IV, on Feb. 29, at McMillan Memorial Hospital, Brewton.”
“Navy Petty Officer Third Class Larry L. Andrews, son of Mr. Roland Andrews of Rt. D, Evergreen, has completed nearly two months of continuous operations in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea aboard the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise.
“The Enterprise was ordered to the Indian Ocean during the height of the Indo-Pakistani war in the event it became necessary to evacuate Americans from East Pakistan.
“A visit to Subic Bay in the Phillipines ended the arduous deployment.”
“Reward now $1,100 in Salter beating: A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the beating and robbing of Purnell and Broughton Satler was increased to $1,100 this week.
“The two elderly brothers were viciously beaten and robbed at their home in Burnt Corn some months ago.”

“Lewis Snyder Richardson, age 50, owner and operator of the City Café, died at the local hospital Fri., March 8, after an illness of about one week.
“Mr. Richardson moved to Evergreen from Kremmling, Colo. about six years ago. He had owned an operated the City Café for the past five years.”
“Mrs. Hunter Morgan and Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan spent Monday with Gillis Morgan at the University of Alabama.”
“Construction was begun this week on an important link in the state’s east-west highway system in northern Conecuh County.
“The contract on the Manti-Midway road was let to the Watson-Strawhorn Construction Co. of Fulton, Miss., for about $138,000. The road is 9.2 miles long and connects with other east-west roads, crossing the state.
“The new road will pass through the communities of Manti, Annex, Asbury Church and will continue through Midway. At Midway it will join up with Highway 83 and 47. It will start at the Conecuh-Butler County lines, extending Highway 106.
“The project is joint state and federal, with engineering and supervision being furnished by the county.
“Completion of the road is scheduled in about five months, since the contract calls for a limit of 100 working days.”

“W.C. Galloway left here Wednesday for Atlanta where he goes to report to the Commanding Officer of the Fourth Corps Area for assignment to active duty with the armed forces.
“He is a veteran of the last war, having spent more than a year overseas. At the time he left the service he held a first lieutenant’s commission in the infantry.”
“A letter received recently by A.K. Williams Jr. from Dick Robinson states that he is now stationed at U.S. Naval hospital, San Diego, Calif., with a rating of hospital attendant first class.”
“Joe Thomas Chavers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Chavers, of Rt. 2, Castleberry, Ala., has been accepted for enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, and has been sent to Birmingham, where he will be given his final examination.”
“The Page old home (in Castleberry) was completely burned last Thursday night at about 8:30. The fire was thought to have started in a room where hay was stored. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Miller who lived there lost all their household goods.”
“Otis Lee has been called for active duty with the U.S. Navy.”
“The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Dean are glad to hear their son, Fred, serving with the U.S. Air Corps in Hawaii, has been promoted from Sergeant to rank of Staff Sergeant.”
“Fairhope Masons are working for the advancement of their home guards.”

“The City Board of Education and the Mayor and Town Council by cooperating together have made final settlement with Mr. W.K. Horton on the citizen’s note of $12,500 which was made several years ago for the purpose of securing funds to complete the City School building.”
“At an early hour Saturday night, a fire of unknown origin broke out and completely destroyed the barn of C.C. Gaston, prominent merchant and farmer of Belleville. Two splendid mules, a large hog, 500 bushels of corn, quantity of hay, farming implements and other valuable property were burned with the barn.”
“The Mayor and Town Council of Evergreen, are planning a series of big improvements in Evergreen for the near future as will be noted by the program outlined below:
“The Council is first considering the paving of the business streets as originally proposed by the past administration, with a few minor changes.
“The business streets which are being considered by the Council for paving are as follows: West Front Street from Rural Street to Cooper Street; Rural Street from West Front Street to 100 feet past the intersection of Court Street; Court Street from Rural Street to Liberty Strets; Jackson Street from Rural Street to Liberty Street; East Front Street from Cemetery Avenue to Mill Street; Cary Street from East Front Street to Desplous Street; Mill Street from East Front Street to Desplous Street; Desplous Street from Cary Street to Mill Street will also probably be included.”
