The Lady Warriors finished second in the state in Class A Division of the APSA and had a record of 22 wins and eight losses.

He earned All Southeastern Conference honors in 1963 and 1964 and was an All-American in 1964. Tom is an active member of the Normandale Baptist Church in Montgomery and is active in youth work in his and other churches.”
“Turkey season open Saturday: In the wee hours of March 20, many households will be disturbed with the hurried preparation of avid turkey hunters as Alabama’s spring turkey season begins.
“The gobble of the wild turkey will excite hunters in all or parts of 51 counties in Alabama during the spring season which extends from March 20 to April 26.
“With the exception of the northern one-fourth of the state, Henry County, Dale County, east of U.S. Highway 231 and Baldwin County south of U.S. Highway 98, the gobbler will be fair game.
“Alabama’s law permits the taking of five gobblers (no hens) during the combined fall 1970 and spring 1971 seasons.”
“The big ones were biting in Florida last weekend. Jerry Brundage brought home these two each of which weighed 14 pounds.”

“C.C.T.S. Girls Win State Basketball Championship: The C.C.T.S. girls won their third state basketball championship in the past five years and finished second in the state the other two years in this five-year period.
“Coach Michael Cheatham has developed championship teams which have been respected, admired and feared all over the state.
“The girls from Conecuh County avenged their only defeat this season by defeating the highly rated Shiloh High School from Dallas County. In an Invitational Tournament three weeks prior to the state tournament, Shiloh defeated the Evergreen girls by one point in a closely contested game all the way.
“Conecuh County defeated Shiloh in the quarterfinals and moved into the semi-finals to meet a strong team from Walker County Training School of Jasper, Ala.
“The sensational ball handling by the entire team and accurate shots by Betty Jones and Maxine Salter kept Walker County girls trailing all the way after the first quarter.
“In the opposite bracket from Evegreen, Carver High School of Dothan was dealing with the opposition in the same fashion as Evergreen’s girls. In the semifinals, the fans started looking forward to the finals between Evergreen and Dothan.
“These two teams met in the finals and Dothan took an early lead of 9-3 midway the first quarter. During the first half Evergreen girls seemed too tense and too cautious. The half ended 23-19 in favor of Dothan.
“Playing true to form, the Evergreen team came back in the second half and took possession. It was clear that the Conecuh girls had hit their stride and Dothan was rarely in possession of the ball. A beautiful trophy was added to already massive collections of trophies at the Conecuh County School. Betty Jones, Maxine Salter, Evelyn Salter, Murl Gross, Gwendolyn Evans and Virley Nelson played like champions throughout the tournament.”

“On Saturday, our (Evergreen High School’s) junior basketball team was defeated in Montgomery by Titus, 26-19, and by Capitol Heights, 26-20. However, we made a very good showing.
“The champion basketball team of our school has proven to be the Senior Is. They received a beautiful trophy, given by the Senior IIs. Very proud were the boys to receive it. It took hard playing to win over the other fine teams we have.”
“The annual Spring public turkey hunt in the Black Warrior National Forest in north Alabama will be held on the 15 days from March 29 through April 13, it was announced this week by the State Department of Conservation and the U.S. Forest Service, co-sponsors of the event.
“Rules and regulations governing former deer and turkey hunts in the Black Warrior will be in effect this year, it was announced. A permit fee of $1 will entitle the participant to hunt until he gets a gobbler, between March 29 and April 13, under the supervision of state game wardens and forest rangers. A state hunting license is also necessary, it was said.”
