“Escambia beats Warriors, 30-12: The Escambia Academy Cougars beat the Sparta Academy Warriors, 30-12, in a spring practice game Friday night at Stuart-McGehee Field. The game climaxed spring practice for both teams.
“Pretty much stifled on the ground, Sparta unveiled a potent passing attack that netted 103 yards and a touchdown on five completions in seven attempts by Kenny Bledsoe. Lee Wild was unsuccessful on one attempt.
“Robbie Bolton had two catches for 71 yards and a TD that covered 61 including three for a TD on eight carries, Bryant Robinson two on one, and Bledsoe lost 14 on one carry and Jason Williams lost 20 on one.”

From “Beano Baker’s SPORTSBEAT” – “There’s good news and bad news concerning the University of South Alabama Lady Jaguars, coached by former Evergreen Aggie mentor Charles Branum. The 24-5 Jags will make their first ever appearance in the NCAA tourney this week against St. Joseph’s of Pennsylvania. That’s the good news. The bad news is the winner of the USA-St. Joe match-up must travel to Austin to take on defending champion, Texas. Good luck, Charlie.”

“EVERGREEN BABE RUTH: The Evergreen Babe Ruth League will register for the 1987 season on Sat., March 14, and Sat., March 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Evergreen Municipal Park. Registration fees will be $15, and you must bring birth certificate for proof of age.”

“Beginner’s luck, Mrs. Johnny (Louise) Rotch said after she hauled in this fine string of bass which weighed 21 pounds. Like a veteran, she declined to tell where she caught the fish.”

From “HI-LITES of EHS” – “Baseball and Track: There seems to be a little excitement around EHS this week. Baseball and track started with a big bang. There is an estimate of 50 to 60 boys out for the two sports. All of Coach Hart’s football boys will contribute the speed and stamina. It seems that we will not have an experienced team in baseball. We are hoping however that these two sports turn out well.”

From “As A Man Thinketh” by R.G. Bozeman - “I was talking to one of Evergreen’s most avid and successful turkey hunters one morning this week and he reminded me (for what reason I do not know, as I have never been turkey hunting) that the turkey season was opening next week – March 21, I believe he said. I can’t tell you his name for this reason – he told me he had already talked with one of his buddies out near one of his favorite hunting spots and his buddy told him that he sat on his porch one morning last week and heard seven different gobblers gobble. Turkey hunters are careful about letting out any information as to the whereabouts of gobblers they locate, so if I mentioned names I would be in trouble. Though I never do any turkey hunting myself, I am lucky enough to get invited to a turkey dinner occasionally. Not for anything would I do or say anything that might offend one of these hunters and thereby forfeit my chance of being invited to eat wild turkey.”

“J.H. ROBISON SUFFERS PAINFUL INJURIES: J.H. Robison, manager of the Lone Star Service Station, suffered painful injuries to his left ankle Friday night in an accident which occurred while he was skating at the high school. He was participating in a skating party which was given as a benefit event by the high school students. According to reports, a small child fell in front of him and in his effort to avoid hitting the child, he lost balance, fell himself causing the injury to his ankle.”

“S.S.A.S. ATHLETIC FUND REPORT: Receipts, Expenditures and Indebtedness of the S.S.A.S. Athletic Association For the Year 1926-27 To Date: There seems to be a question in some minds as to the use of funds raised by the school to maintain the Athletic Dept. during the current year. Therefore, I am publishing the following statement showing receipts, disbursements and outstanding indebtedness.
“I might say in passing, that this Department gets no support from the state other than the services of one of the teachers as a coach. Neither is it supported wholly or in part by the town but is dependent entirely on gate receipts and student activities for support.
“Football is the most expensive sport; it requiring about $23 to equip each player. Baseball second with about $12, and basketball about $3. Of course all this equipment is not purchased annually but enough is necessary to run the cost near the $500 mark.
“Summary of Expenditures: Telephone and telegraph, $28.41; Expense on plays by students, $13.71; Books for library, $8.26; Paid visiting teams, $236; Paid on debt, $294.97; Paid on maintenance, dues, supplies, advertising, $102.24; Transportation and expenses of team on trips, $164.80; Meals for visiting teams, $53.20; Total, $903.24.
“Summary of receipts: Gate receipts and receipts from trips to other schools, football and basketball games, $569.09; Donations for meals and b’ball, $29.45; From Peptometer, $100; Plays staged by students, $187.11; From boys for shoes, $11.40; Miscellaneous, $15.10; Cash balance from last year, $14.00; Total, $926.15.
“Balance on hand now, $22.91.
“Due May & Green, Equipment, $205.55;
“Due Thoss Sporting Goods, $45.74;
“Due T.A. Gantt rent, on field, $33.23;
“Total, $284.52;
“Less cash on hand, $22.91;
“Net indebtedness, $261.61.
“Athletic debt from last year, $117.94;
“Lyceum debt from last year, $83.94;
“Library debt from last year, $8.26;
“Total old debt, $210.14
“I wish to state that I have a careful record of all receipts and expenditures, itemized account of each, and anyone desiring to check same will please call at the Principal’s office.
“(Signed) W.B. Sexton.”
