I watched several good movies during the past week – “Identity Thief” (2013), “Paranormal Activity 4” (2012) and “Flight” (2012) – and some of you out there might want to check them out.
My wife and I watched “Identity Thief” last night in Mobile. Released on Feb. 8, this comedy stars Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Amanda Peet, John Cho and Robert Patrick. In a nutshell it’s about a guy named Sandy Patterson, who works in a high profile financial firm in Denver. He and his wife, who is expecting their third child, are barely getting by on his modest salary, but things go from bad to worse when his identity is stolen by a pathetic con artist in Florida.
In order to save his job, he travels to Florida and tracks down this con artist, who is living high on the hog thanks to a wallet full of fake credit cards. Patterson convinces the woman to travel cross-country with him to Denver to clear his name, but more than a few members of the criminal underworld are hot on her trail as well. Does Patterson clear his name in the end? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out. No spoilers here.
Also this week, I watched the fourth installment in the “Paranormal Activity” horror movie series. Released on Oct. 19, 2012 (just in time for Halloween), this was my favorite “Paranormal Activity” movie aside from the very first one, which was an instant classic. Starring Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, Brady Allen, Aiden Lovekamp and Katie Featherston, this movie begins with the very creepy, late night kidnapping of an infant from his mother’s arms.
Fast-forward five years to Henderson, Nevada, where the rest of the movie takes place. Things seem pretty normal until the across-the-street neighbor’s kid has to spend a few nights with the main characters because his mom’s in the hospital for some mysterious reason. Things begin to go bump in the night, and teenagers in the house, armed with their laptops and an Xbox Kinect, begin to investigate. Unfortunately for them, by the time they learn the awful truth about what’s going on, it’s much too late.
Also during the past week, I watched a pretty awesome movie called “Flight.” Released on Nov. 2, 2012, this dramatic film is about a hard-partying commercial pilot who pulls off an in-flight miracle by guiding a very much doomed jet liner to the ground, saving all lives aboard except for about half a dozen unlucky people. Despite his in air heroics, the investigation into what happens reveals alcohol and cocaine in his blood and much of the movie is about how he deals with this situation.
Starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, John Goodman, Kelly Reilly and Bruce Greenwood, this movie was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time, and I was surprised that wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. If it had won, I wouldn’t have been surprised.
In the end, how many of these movies have you seen? What did you think about them? Which was your favorite? Let us know in the comments section below.
