It’s Wednesday, so today I give you my weekly list of movies that will open in theatres this week as well as a list of movies that will be released this week on DVD.
I hope this will serve as a useful guide as to what’s going on this week if you happen to be near a movie theatre or if you’re looking for something to drop into your NetFlix queue or pick up at the local Redbox.
Movies that are scheduled to hit theatres this week include:
- Admission (Comedy, Drama, PG-13): Directed by Paul Weitz and starring Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Nat Wolff, Gloria Reuben and Michael Sheen.
- The Croods (Family, Comedy, Adventure, PG): Written and directed by Chris Sanders and starring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener and Clark Duke.
- Eden (Drama, R): Directed by Megan Griffiths and starring Jamie Chung, Matt O’Leary, Beau Bridges, Scott Mechlowicz and Tantoo Cardinal.
- Gimme the Loot (Drama, Comedy): Directed by Adam Leon and starring Ty Hickson, Zoe Lescaze, Joshua Rivera and Tashiana Washington.
- Hunky Dory (Drama, Musical): Directed by Marc Evans and starring Minnie Driver, Haydn Gwynne, Bob Pugh, Owen Teale and Steve Speirs.
- Love and Honor (Romance, Drama, PG-13): Directed by Danny Mooney and starring Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Aimee Teegarden, Chris Lowell and Austin Stowell.
- MURPH: The Protector (Documentary, PG): Written and directed by Scott Mactavish.
- Olympus Has Fallen (Action, Suspense, R): Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Radha Mitchell, Aaron Eckhart and Dylan McDermott.
- The Sapphires (Comedy, Musical, PG-13): Directed by Wayne Blair and starring Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell.
- Starbuck (Comedy, R): Directed by Ken Scott and starring Patrick Huard, Julie LeBreton, Antoine Bertrand, Dominic Philie and Marc Belanger.
New DVD releases this week include:
- Bachelorette (Comedy, R): Directed by Lesley Headland and starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson and James Marsden.
- Hellgate (Horror, Not Rated): Directed by John Penney and starring Cary Elwes, Liz Burnett and William Hurt.
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Adventure, Fantasy, PG-13): Directed by Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Lee Pace, Ian Holm and Luke Evans.
- Les Miserables (Drama, Musical, PG-13): Directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks and Amanda Seyfried.
- The Other Son (Drama, PG-13): Directed by Lorraine Levy and starring Emmanuelle Devos, Pascal Elbe, Mehdi Dehbi, Jules Sitruk and Areen Omari.

- Straight A’s (Comedy, Drama, R): Directed by James Cox and starring Anna Paquin, Ryan Phillippe, Luke Wilson, Powers Boothe and Riley Thomas Stewart.
- This is 40 (Comedy, R): Directed by Judd Apatow and starring Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Megan Fox, Jason Segel and Albert Brooks.
- Zero Dark Thirty (Action, Drama, R): Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Kyle Chandler, Mark Strong and Jennifer Ehle.
If I could only watch one movie at the theatre this week, it would be “Olympus Has Fallen,” and if I had to pick just one DVD to rent this week, it would be “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
