Aggies lose finale to
Panthers 51-0: In their final game of the ’71 season, the Evergreen Aggies were
overpowered by the Geneva Panthers, 51-0. The game, played in the cold Geneva
stadium, was dominated by the Panthers throughout its entirety. The loss left
the Aggies with a season record of 1-9.
After an exchange of punts
(early in the game), Tony Weaver intercepted a (Don) Crutchfield pass on the
Aggie 21-yard line. On the following play, halfback Frank McMillan dropped back
to pass, and it was picked off by Ricky Beck. The Panthers went on to score on
a two-yard burst by fullback Tony Ward.
Following the kickoff and an
Aggie punt, Tony Weaver picked up his second interception of the evening and
returned it to the Aggie five-yard line. This time, two plays later Willie
Paige attempted to pass, and it was picked off by (Johnny) Register and
returned for a touchdown.
Playing their final game for
the Aggies were seniors Frank McMillan, Gene Jones, Tony Weaver, Whalen Oliver,
Travis Sims, Marc Williams, Art Ward, Frank Murphy, Robert Johnson, Clinton
Jackson, Alvin Lee and Julius Booker. Also present were seniors Harold Rogers
and Calvin Samuels who were unable to play due to injuries received during the
season.
Sparta deer hunt set Dec. 4:
The second annual deer hunt sponsored by the Sparta Academy Quarterback Club
will be held on Sat., Dec. 4. The first hunt last year was most successful with
hunters getting seven bucks and reporting numerous missed shots.
Several landowners have made
available again this year some 5,000 acres of closely controlled land for the
hunt. There are about 200 stands available at $15 each. The hunt is limited to
buckshot only as a safety measure.
Hunters will assemble at Sparta
Academy on Pierce Street at 6:30 and be taken to their numbered stands.
Breakfast and a barbecue lunch are included in the ticket price. Tickets may be
obtained from Eldon Scott at the Conecuh County Bank or from any Sparta QB Club
member.

Aggies Bow To Miller 20-6;
Show Improved Offense Friday Night: With Wayne Frazier running in the Aggie
backfield, Evergreen’s offense seemed much improved, but not enough to score
enough points to win over favored T.R. Miller Friday night. Miller scored three
times to win over the Aggies, 20-6.
Wayne Frazier proved to be a
football player of the old school, in running with the ball, kicking off,
passing, punting, receiving passes, blocking and intercepting passes, to do
everything in the book. He passed to Mickey Joyner for the Aggies’ lone score
in the third quarter. Frazier also was high man in the Aggie offense, gaining
105 of the Aggies’ 154-yard total.
Aggies Close Season; Meet
Georgiana Team There Friday Night: Two of South Alabama’s usually strong teams
will square off tomorrow (Friday) night in Georgiana for what is termed
strictly a battle between “weak sisters” when the Evergreen Aggies meet the
Georgiana Panthers.
This will be the last game of
the season for both teams and a victory would be mighty sweet to either.
The game marks the final
football battle for 12 Aggie seniors: Mickey Joyner, end; alt. capt. Russell
Deason, tackle; capt. Wayne Frazier, tackle; Bert Cook, end; Jack Harper, back;
Jack Gladwell, guard; Ray Wallace, end; Billy Taylor, end; and Rufus Lynch,
back. Bert Tuggle and Bobby Kendall, both seniors, have been out since early in
the season with injuries and will not play.
Annual Quarterback Club
Banquet Will Be Tuesday November 20: Tickets for the Annual Quarterback Club
Banquet are now on sale and may be purchased from club members and also from
parents of Evergreen band members, according to J.W. Weaver, president of the
quarterbacks.
An interesting program and an
excellent menu have been arranged for those who attend this year, Weaver said.
Main speaker for the evening will be Bubba Nesbitt, backfield coach for the
University of Alabama and also one of their top scouts and recruiters.
E.L. (Coach) McInnis is
chairman of the food committee and promises an outstanding meal for those who
attend.

ANNEX SCHOOL: The basketball
season seems to definitely be here. The first games were played at Starlington
last week. The Annex girls were victorious over the Starlington girls with a
score of 13 to 12. The boys played a hard game but only succeeded in tying the
score. Both games were enjoyed very much, and we hope to again be the victors
when the game is returned.
