“Hillcrest adds new coaches: Hillcrest High School’s coaching staff has had growing pains over the summer with six new assistant coaches joining the Jaguars’ staff. The coaches are head coach Maurice Belser, James Thompson, Terry Gandy, Matt Blake, Clinton Smith, Jasen Craik, Jerrell Burns and Brandon Armstrong.”
“Sparta Academy opened its first fall football practice under the direction of new head coach Mike Sims Monday morning.
“Sims was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in the middle of last season and led the Warriors through spring drills in May.
“Twenty-six of the Warriors’ 27 players in grades 8-12 attended the first practice of the 2007 season.
“Sims said that the team’s depth in the offensive and defensive lines has improved.
“Linemen returning include the Cinereski brothers, Chris and Kyle. Both are seniors and Chris is the biggest at 6-5, 280. Kyle checks in at 6-feet, 260.”
“Expectations of improving on last year’s 0-10 season are running high but Hillcrest High School’s Jaguars are still a young team with just seven seniors on this year’s team.
“Head coach Maurice Belser, who is starting his second season, said having been able to oversee the Jaguars’ program for a full year and through the summer workouts has been an advantage he did not have going into the 2006 season.”

“The 8th Annual Bill McGehee Junior Invitational Golf Tournament was played July 14, 1992 at the Evergreen Golf Club. Winners in the 13-14 age group were Walton Hickman of Greenville, third, and Kyle Boatwright of Andalusia, first. Pictured with the boys is Nell Stuart, Tournament Director. (Wade Warren of Birmingham finished second.)
“Evergreen City Council members decided to wait for a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Committee after a request was made for a $3,000 donation to the Evergreen Little League program.
“Representing the youth baseball leagues, Artie Wright told the council members that additional funding was needed because of the increased number of players and the need to equip three planned new teams for the 1993 season.
“During the 1992 season, each of the four teams in the three divisions had a minimum of 15 players. Because of the lack of funding, minor league and T-ball teams were not able to be fully uniformed. Also, older equipment was used by the players.
“Wright said all indications are that the same situation will be the case during the 1993 season unless additional funding is received.
“Councilman Jerry Caylor, himself a minor league coach, echoed the sentiments of the Little League representative by saying that the leagues have outgrown the number of teams and that new teams would have to be formed in each age division.”

“Our ‘Yard Apes’ trounce Auburn at Rugby 34-0” by Jim Andrews – “The Evergreen Rugby Team beat Auburn in their last match at Auburn, 34-0.
“Auburn was no competition for the much improved Evergreen Club as the ‘Greentown Yard Apes’ (as we are known statewide) scored almost at will.
“Bruce Hutcheson caused a lot of excitement as he scored twice. In doing so, he was constantly running from one side of the field to the other with (Rick) Tehliard and his buddies in hot pursuit. Darwin Cook also scored two trys, but there was nothing spectacular about either one of them.”
