“Greenies Meet Dothan Here For Game Today: The wandering Greenies return home today after three days on the road to play the Dothan Browns at Gantt Field this afternoon. The Greenies are now under the managership of the new owner, Paul Kardow, former major league pitcher with the Cleveland Indians and later with Knoxville and New Orleans in the Southern Association. Kardow is scheduled to pitch the game this afternoon and while no announcement as to Manager Wingard’s choice has been made, it is believed that he will pitch Joe Beaugez, former Greenie mound star against the Greenies this afternoon.
“Kardow has kept the wires hot in an effort to bolster the strength of the local team. Although many of the star players on the local club were sold before Kardow became owner, he can still place a good team on the field. Dinges will play first base today in the absence of Sanford, a new player who suffered a broken arm in Troy Monday. It is possible that two or three changes will be made in the lineup before today’s game.
“Local fans are urged to turn out en masse today since it will probably be the last home game of the year. At a meeting in Troy Sunday, the league directors decided to move the closing date up to Aug. 17, thereby eliminating the last nine games of the season. This move was made because of financial difficulties that two of the league clubs are having. If attendance is good today there is a strong possibility of Kardow bringing the club back to Evergreen next year. It is possible that several inducements will be offered him but he is most anxious to see what the local drawing power at the gate will be.”
