“Jason Watkins, a senior at
Hillcrest High School, signed a full football scholarship last Wednesday with
the University of West Alabama. He is the son of James and Hazel Watkins. The
standout performer for the Jags was signed to play fullback for the Tigers.
Looking on are Hillcrest head coach Arlton Hudson and Jason’s mother, Hazel.”
“The Sparta Academy Warriors
participated in the Class AA, East Area II Regional Championship Tournament
held Feb. 3-4 at Sparta Academy. The Warriors lost to Calvary School, 73-47,
and that concluded their 1999-2000 basketball season. Lee Booker was named to
the All-Tournament Team.
“Lee Booker was the leading
scorer for the Warriors with 23 points. Also putting points on the board were
Jake Adams with eight points, Kyle Johnston with seven points, Justin Tranum
with four points and Tyler Petrey with three points. Calvary scored two points
for Sparta when one of their players tipped the ball into the basket going for
the rebound.”
“The Sparta Academy Lady Warriors won the Class AA, East
Area II Regional Championship Tournament held Feb. 3-4 at Sparta Academy. The
Lady Warriors defeated Calvary School, 64-41, and Greenville Academy, 48-45, to
claim the championship. Katie Etheridge was named Tournament MVP and Ashley
Hammonds and Jill Pate were named to the All-Tournament Team.”

“Special meeting of QB Club
Feb. 25: The Evergreen High School Quarterback Club will have a meeting on Feb.
25 at 7 p.m. in the old armory behind the high school.
“The guest speaker will be
Marshall Smith, Troy State University athletic trainer. He will present a
program on athletes’ knees, knee injuries and knee braces. Smith will have a
slide presentation and will demonstrate one of the newer knee braces. He will
answer any questions you may have on this subject.”
“Lyeffion hosts region
tourney: Lyeffion High School is hosting the Regional Basketball Tournament
with five teams participating: McKenzie, Castleberry, Lyeffion, Southern Normal
and W.J. Jones. The semifinals will begin tonight at six o’clock and the finals
will be Friday at seven o’clock.”
“Sparta wins one, loses one
in meet: The Sparta Academy Varsity Boys won one game and lost one in the
District Tournament played at Monroe Academy Feb. 8-9. Al Etheridge and Jim
Wagstaff were named to the All-Tournament Team. Sparta’s Girls lost both of
their games and Tracy Holmes made the All-Tournament Team, according to Sports
Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
“Monroe Academy defeated the
Warriors, 67-61, in the opening round. Al Etheridge had 23 points; Jim Marino
and Jim Wagstaff, 11 each; Tim Brantley, seven; Brandon Salter, four; Jason
West, three; and Mark Rigsby, two.
“Sparta beat Wilcox Academy,
71-69, in the consolation game."

banquet: The annual Football Banquet will be held on Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Lyeffion High School Lunchroom. Coach Baccum from Mississippi State will be
the guest speaker.”
“Aggies host 3A District
Tournament: The Evergreen High Aggies play host to 10 teams next week as the
District 1, Region 2, 3A Tournament gets underway in Memorial Gymnasium.
Capacity crowds are expected every night, and Coach Charles Branum suggests that
local fans make plans to ‘get there early’ in order to get a seat.
“Action gets underway Monday
night at 6:30 as Atmore High meets W.S. Neal of Brewton. Top-seeded Marshall
High of Evergreen meets Jackson at 8:00.
“Tuesday night, Marengo
County-Dixon Mills meets Escambia County Training School at 6:30, and the host
Evergreen Aggies tackle Camden Academy.
“Union High of Monroeville
plays the winner of the Atmore-Neal game at 6:30 Wednesday night, and
Monroeville High meets the winner of the Marshall-Jackson game at 8:00.
“The semifinals will be
played Thursday night at 6:30 and 8:00 and the finals are scheduled for Friday
night.”
“Skipper fourth: According to
statistics released last week by the South Alabama Conference, John Earl
Skipper of the Evergreen High Aggies is currently holding fourth place in the
SAC scoring race. Skipper has scored 308 points in 15 games for a 20.5
average.”

“Sickness and Conflicts Cause
Schedule Changes: There were some changes made on the Evergreen Aggies’
schedule this week due to sickness and conflicts. Evergreen was supposed to
play Castleberry there last Tuesday night, but the game was postponed because
of sickness on the Castleberry squad. The game will be played in Castleberry
next Tues., Feb. 15.
“Tonight the Aggies journey
to Lyeffion to play the Yellow Jackets. This game was originally scheduled for
Friday night, but was changed because of the Sweetheart Dance at E.H.S. to be
held at that time.
“The rest of the games of the
season are as follows, Feb. 16, Monroeville, Here; Feb. 18, Andalusia, There;
Feb. 22, Castleberry, Here; Feb. 25, Greenville, There; March 1, Andalusia,
Here.”
“The Evergreen Aggies,
fielding a much taller team and hitting a deadly percentage of their shots
easily whipped the Lyeffion Yellow Jackets to the tune of 86 to 24 in Memorial
Gym last Wednesday night.
“Evergreen center Randy White
had his best night of the season as he made 19 of 24 free throws and eight
field goals for his high of the year of 35 points.”
“Last Friday night, the
Aggies journeyed to Brewton where they downed the W.S. Neal Eagles on their
home court by a score of 59 to 44.
“The Evergreen scorers, as
usual, were led by consistent Randy White, who made nine field goals and 13 for
17 free throws for an evening’s total of 31 points. Ward Alexander was right
behind White with 14 points.”

“The Evergreen (High School)
basketball team was again victorious Friday night when the boys defeated
Georgiana with a score of 11 to 9. The game was very close and exciting. That’s
fine boys, we’re ‘rooting’ for you!"
