“Sweet Water edges Repton Bulldogs: The Repton Bulldogs lost their chance for a championship title as the Sweet Water Bulldogs squeaked by 10-7.
“In the first quarter, Sweet Water scored first on a 29-yard field goal.
“Finally, late in the fourth quarter, Repton drove the ball 92 yards for a touchdown made by John Thompson on a 27-yard run. Spencer Day’s kick gave the Repton ‘Dogs a 7-3 advantage. With 1:19 left, Sweet Water threw a 65-yard bomb for the upsetting TD. The kick was good making the final score, 10-7.
“A new offensive record was set at Repton as John Thompson rushed for 1,900 yards for the season. Carl Stanton finished with over 1,300 yards.
“Coach (Hugh) Wilson commended the effort of the entire defense, naming Mark Nettles, David Welch and Greg Rudolph specifically. “Irby Daw and Robert Brown brought in this fine string of suckers Saturday. The fishermen had this to say: ‘Hail, all you dough ball fishermen! When you set your hook in the jaw of the elusive sucker, then the race starts with all the running, diving… and just like lightning, the end of your cane pole.”
From “Front Page, Upper Left Corner” by Bob Bozeman – “Happiness is (to us Alabama folks) basking in the warmth of that great win Saturday.
“Happiness is seeing staunch Auburn backer Barbara Register with a neatly typed card on her blouse, saying ‘Wait until next year.’
“Happiness is getting back some of those dollars you dropped in ’69 and ’70.
“I think both sides were surprised at the way the Tide did roll, know I was. Victory I expected but certainly not by that wide a margin. And wouldn’t have believed the War Eagles could be held to less than three touchdowns.
“I guess the game could best be summed up by what the late Elbert Northcutt once said on a Saturday after Andalusia had trounced the Aggies: ‘I’ll tell you what was wrong last night, we didn’t take our football,’ he declared.
“Was certainly glad to see Auburn’s Pat Sullivan win the Heisman Trophy. The award was deserved by an outstanding athlete who proved his greatness Saturday after Saturday for three seasons. Probably never again will a passing combination the equal of Sullivan to Beasley grace college football field.”

“E.H.S. Aggie Cagers Open With T.R. Miller In Brewton Tues. Nite: Evergreen High’s Aggie Cagers open their season with varsity and B team games in Brewton next Tuesday night with the T.R. Miller Tigers.
“Head coach Wendell Hart has only two returning lettermen to rebuild this year’s squad from. Hardest man to replace will be EHS’s All-Time center and basketball player, towering Randy White. White led last year’s team to the best record in the history of the school and to the State High School Basketball Tournament as he broke every existing school record. “However, Coach Hart expects to field another strong team building it around his two outstanding returning lettermen, Wayne Frazier and Mickey Joyner. Both boys stand 6-3 and have scoring and rebounding ability that should spell plenty of trouble to Aggie opponents.
“Frazier will probably jump at center, but Bill Ivey and Bert Cook will both be used at the pivot position with Frazier probably shifting to alternate forward with Joyner while working the ball.
“Working in the back court at the guards will be Zeke Zukowski, Jimmy Moorer and Jack Harper, all moving up from the B team. Jimmy Bell, Robbie Boykin, W.A. Pate and George Pugh are all right in the thick of the battle for a starting position.
“B team coach Ray Owens said that he would have more to say about his squad after they saw a little action as every position is still wide open.”
“Mr. and Mrs. D.T. Stuart and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sessions spent the weekend in Birmingham and attended the Auburn-Alabama football game.”
