“Evergreen’s Drew Davis, the University of Alabama’s starting right tackle, was named one of two recipients of the Pat Trammel Award during the football team’s annual awards banquet.”

“The No. 7-ranked Sparta Academy varsity girls picked up their fourth and fifth wins of the season during the past week by demolishing a pair of region opponents.”
Players on Sparta’s team that year included Kayla Baggett, Madelyn Black, Emily Booker, Rebekah Coleman, Shaina Hutcheson, Emily Kendrick, Tiffany Martin, Grace Matlock, April Palmer, Erica Palmer and Ashton Raines.

“Hillcrest High School’s varsity boys basketball team suffered a 52-45 loss to the No. 2-ranked J.F. Shields Panthers Friday night in the opening round of the Hub City Classic Tournament in Monroeville.
“William Grace scored 20 points to lead Hillcrest against Shields, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A.”

“Sparta Academy’s varsity boys basketball team posted two big wins during the past week, including a 56-point whipping of region rival, Sumter Academy.
“Devlin Crosby led Sparta with 20 points, three rebounds and an assist.”
Other players on Sparta’s team that year included Nick Andrews, Tom Andrews, Dalton Baggett, Joey Bradley, Michael Brown, Michael Cook, Nick Hardin, Jacob Hendrix, Cody House, Garrett McClain, Dylan Middleton and Drayton Rodgers.

“Lady Warriors take third place Monroe Tourney: On Thurs., Dec. 1, 1994 the Sparta Academy Lady Warriors lost to the Greenville Academy Tornadoes, 64-48, in the first round of the Monroe Academy Invitational Tournament.
“Leading the scoring for the Lady Warriors was Carrie Lambert with 11 points; followed by Nikki Jones with nine points; Missy Westwood and Aundria Griffin, six points; Valerie Griffin, three points; and Landra Padgett and Kim Waters, two points each.
“In the consolation game on Sat., Dec. 3, the Lady Warriors defeated Crenshaw Academy, 47-28, to claim third place in the tournament.
“Leading the scoring for the Lady Warriors were Carrie Lambert with 24 points and Nikki Jones with 21 points. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Warriors were Landra Padgett with two points and Missy Westwood, one point.”

“Each year about this time I do an in depth analysis on the subtle and complicated facts of modern football. To put it precisely I always like to quote my late uncle Beauregard Cornwallis English, who blithely retorted, ‘My fellow Americans, there are two kinds of football players, tackles and cowards.
“To translate this effectively, it means if your 325-pound monsters ain’t tougher than their 325-pound monsters, all is lost. Or another thought – with good blocking, grandmother could run the ball or without protection, no hot passing quarterback will last 10 minutes.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors evened their season record at 1-1 and won their first basketball game of the 1979-80 season as they routed Fort Deposit Academy, 52-21.
“Terry Shipp hit for 16 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to pace the Warriors. Terry Peacock had 13 points; Ronny McKenzie, nine; Richard Tate, six; Bobby Mason, four; Jeff Johnson, two points and 10 rebounds; and Andy Hammonds, two points.”

“Aggies romp past Miller for eighth win: Coach Charles Branum’s Evergreen High Aggies coasted past old rival T.R. Miller of Brewton, 91-49, here Tuesday night. It was the undefeated Aggies’ eighth straight win of the 1979-80.
“Horace Smith meshed 20 points and Joe Mitchell 18 to lead the Aggie rout of Miller. Perona Rankins had 12 points; (Sanford) Moye, Williams and Floyd, eight each; (Philander) Rodgers and Crosby, four each; (Kenny) Rankins, three; and Bozeman, (John) Allen and Scott, two each.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors opened their basketball season in Monroeville on Dec. 4 with the Vols making a clean sweep of the boys, winning varsity and junior varsity games, but Sparta’s girls won their game.
“Sparta’s girls won, 20-15. Karen Brown had 11 points; Cathy Cope, seven, and Missi Thacker, two, for Sparta, Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr. said.”

DEC. 10, 1964

“Alvin Dees for the second straight year was named to the first team on the Birmingham Post-Herald’s AA All-State football team. Dees earned a berth last year as a junior and repeated this year as a senior.
“Dees played offensive tackle and defensive linebacker for the Aggies. He was a standout in every game this season, usually recognized as the best defensive player on the field. He excelled at linebacking and was in on most of the tackles for Evergreen.
“Dees is 17, a six-footer, who weighs 185. He is expected to receive scholarship offers from several colleges.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies dropped their second straight decision here Tuesday night, losing to T.R. Miller High’s Tigers, 74-45.
“Mike Fields with 10 and Wayne Tolbert with nine led the Aggies. Steve Baggett had six; Billy Kendall and Johnny Brown, five each; Scott Cook, four; and Jimmy Warren, Brent Thornley and Grover Jackson, two each.”

“The Conecuh County High School Blue Devils edged Lyeffion’s Yellow Jackets, 62-56, Tuesday night in the first meeting between county high schools this basketball season. The game was played in Castleberry.
“Donald Janes scored 23 points to lead Coach Wayne Pope’s club to its fourth win in five starts. Jones had three; Heaton, nine; and Godwin, eight; Sawyer, 10, Oliver, five; and Wilson, four; for Castleberry. Sammy Williams hit 16 points to pace Lyeffion with Norwood getting 15; Smith, eight; Daniels, six; Garrett, five; and Wilson, six.”

DEC. 8, 1949

“Andrew Riley Dies At Football Game: Death came as a tragic aftermath to Saturday’s Alabama-Auburn football game in Birmingham when (Evergreen native) Andrew T. Riley, prominent in Selma’s business and cultural life for many years, collapsed and expired at Legion Field Stadium before he could be removed to a hospital.”

“Three members of Coach Wendell Hart’s undefeated 1949 Evergreen High School football team received the highest honor that can be awarded a high school player when they were named to the Montgomery Advertiser-Alabama Journal All-State Team. The team is selected by the votes of high school coaches all over the state and the sports writers of the two Montgomery dailies.
“Evergreen placed two on the first team and one of the third team. John Greel Ralls, triple threat back, and Dickey Bozeman, lanky end, were named to the first team. Capt. Jack Cunningham, outstanding offensive and defensive center, was voted the pivot post on the third team.
“Ralls and Bozeman received honorable mention on the Birmingham Age-Herald team which was announced Tuesday.”

“The first undefeated football team in the history of Evergreen High School will be honored at the Evergreen Quarterback Club’s annual Football Banquet next Tuesday night, Dec. 13. The banquet will be held in the City School lunchroom.”
