“Fire of unknown origin broke
out in the rear of the A&P Store on East Front Street about 3 a.m. this
(Thursday) and did considerable damage to the building and virtually destroyed
the large stock of groceries.
“Quick and effective work on
the part of the Evergreen Fire Department with both fire trucks pressed into
service held the blaze to the one building and little or no damage is reported
in adjoining stores.
“The A&P Store was in the
process of being remodeled this week and the stock was perhaps somewhat less
than it might have been in normal times. However, new fixtures and equipment
being installed are believed to be almost a total loss.
“The building occupied by the
A&P belongs to I. Long & Sons and will be rebuilt just as soon as the
work can be done.”
