“Evergreen High School held their football banquet Feb. 5 at
the school. Awards were presented to the following athletes, Mark Bell,
Outstanding Defensive Back; Gary Weaver, Outstanding Offensive Lineman;
Deatrich Wise, Defensive Lineman and Wendall Hart Memorial Trophy for Most
Valuable Player; and Rickey Stallworth, Outstanding Offensive Back.”
“The Sparta football team had a spectacular season, but the
boys basketball team is proving to be better each game they play. For the first
time, Sparta hosted the District III Basketball Tournament.
In the first game, the girls team paced Greenville Academy,
41-13. Then in the second round, the girls fell victim to Fort Dale.
“The boys team beat Fort Deposit in the first round and
Wilcox in the second round. Then the boys played Monroe Academy in the final
round for the championship. Monroe barely pulled a two-point victory over
Sparta. The Sparta boys team won second place in the district tournament.
“Chris Blatz and Russ Brown were selected to the Boys All
Tournament Team. Cheri Johnson and Tina Bybee were selected to the Girls All
Tournament Team. These four players were also selected to the All District
Team.”

“C.C.T.S. Host To District Girls Basketball Meet” by O.F.
Frazier, Prin. – “The Conecuh County Training School will serve as host to the
South Alabama District Girls Tournament meeting here Feb. 20-21. This is to be
the most competitive and interesting athletic affair held in this section for
many seasons.
“An impressive string of Eagle victories places the
Evergreen sextette in a favored position which causes the many fans to feel
confident of a CCTS victory in this tournament play.
“Recently the Evergreen aggregation defeated Pensacola,
31-28; Thomasville, 27-24 and 30-19; Monroeville, 40-24; Millers Ferry, 44-17;
Central High of Mobile, 32-17; Atmore, 32-25; Hudson High of Selma, 51-32; and
Beatrice, 30-14.
“The CCTS girls record this season shows only three lost
games, two of which were played away from home. The games lost away from home
were to Atmore, 31-40; Millers Ferry, 19-20; and the one game lost at home was
to Monroeville Rosenwald, 30-37.
“High point players for the Eagles girls this season are
Etta Avant and Clementine Dukes, both are juniors.
“The boys team defeated Thomasville, 87-37 and 69-30;
Monroeville Rosenwald, 44-19; Millers Ferry, 50-35 and 56-39; Central High
Mobile, 45-29; Atmore, 52-34; Hudson High, 65-45; and Beatrice, 31-26. The
Eagles were turned back in Atmore by Escambia County Training School to score
of 38-44 and again by Booker Washington in Pensacola, 38-49.
“High point players for the season are Floyd Watts and
Lenord Goldsmith.
“The South Alabama Conference Boys Tournament will be played
in the Eagles gymnasium Evergreen, Ala. Feb. 27-28.”
“Monroe Takes Aggies In High Scoring Contest: The Evergreen
Aggies suffered their 12th setback of the season to a high scoring Monroeville
High team Tuesday night to the tune of 92-61. The game was played in
Monroeville’s new coliseum that is equipped with glass backboards and a rubber
tile floor, one of the best basketball courts in this section of the state.
“Vincent ‘Duke’ Tomlinson gave the Aggies an exhibition of
ball-hawkin, tipping in, and fancy shooting to lead his mates with a 46-point
effort, the most points ever amassed by a single man against an Aggie team.
‘Duke’ sank 17 field goals and 12 free throws while hitting a very high
percentage of his shots.
“Pace ‘Hot’ Bozeman was next in line for high honors for the
night with a 17-point total for Evergreen. Douglas and Alexander had 11 each;
White, 10; Lewis, nine; and Ellington, three, to round out the Aggie scoring.”
“Hazel Walker’s Girls Beat Evergreen 68-57: In a
crowd-pleasing exhibition game before some 800 fans the Evergreen Aggies
dropped a 57-68 decision to Hazel Walker’s Arkansas Travelers, touring all-girl
basketball team, in Memorial Gym last Friday night. The game drew the largest
crowd at the local gym since the district tournament was staged here in 1951,
and the fans got their money’s worth as the girls and Aggies put on a
spectacular and, at times, hilarious show.
“At halftime Hazel Walker gave an exhibition of free
throwing that topped a spectacular effort the Aggie scoring ace, Shirley
Frazier. Frazier, who sports a 19 points per game average, dropped in 12 of 15
throws from the foul line, but Miss Walker didn’t miss a shot, hitting 15 in as
many attempts.”

“Evergreen High School: The past week found the Greenies
losing two bang up basketball games. On Tuesday, the Greenies lost to the
Repton team by the close score, 20-19. Thursday the Greenies tangled with a
fast cage team from Opp, only to lose, 32-29. The game started off fast with
Opp scoring the first goal, but the Greenie team came right back to knot the
count. At the close of the first quarter, the Greenie machine led the Opp five,
13-10. At the start of the second period, the Night Hawks regained the lead and
kept it that way most of the remainder of the game. Don’t think the Greenies
weren’t in there fighting and fighting hard. It seemed as if luck favored the
Hawks, and despite the fine playing of the Greenies, the Hawks narrowly
escaped.
“Friday afternoon, the intramural cage games got off to a
fast start, which the Jr. II and III girls tangled on the hardwood. Once the
Jr. II’s were leading but all was for naught as the Jr. III’s came back to tie
the score, 4-4.
“The Jr. III boys spanked a Jr. II team, 7-0. The Senior I
boys defeated the Jr. III boys, 9-3.
“Friday afternoon, the Greenies will meet the Brooklyn team
on the local court at 2 p.m. All students will have ample time to see the game
– so don’t forget to bring your nickel.
“Correction: Last week we stated that the score of the
Brooklyn game was 29-5, when it should have been, 29-15.”
“Repton School News: The Repton High basketball team is again
shining for dear old Repton High. The team won a victory over Excel by a score
of 26 to 21. Castleberry was defeated by a score of 20 to 11.”
