From “Front Page, Upper Left
Corner” by Bob Bozeman – “Maurice and I took a couple of days off last week and
attended the 97th annual convention of the Alabama Press Association. I always
enjoy being around my fellow newsmen and this time was no different. It was
also good to get to visit with brother Pace who was The Thomasville Times’ lone
delegate at the meeting.
“It always amazes me when
talking with other editors to learn that our subscribers and customers are much
the same, no matter what town or county the editor happens to serve. Printing
customers are universal in that they all wanted it ‘yesterday’ and country

“I. Long & Sons Going Out
of Business; Was Founded 63 Years Ago: I. Long & Sons, historic department
store of this city, is going out of business after 63 years according to
announcement made by owner Alfred Long, son and grandson of the store’s
founders. Stock of the store has been purchased by Jack J. Levenson of
Birmingham, who will sell it at the location on East Front Street.
“I. Long & Sons was
founded in 1890 when Haiman and Max Long, brothers, established a store called
the Red Front. In 1891, their father, I. Long, became a partner and the name
was changed to I. Long & Sons, the style under which it operated until this
year.
“The store’s history is one
of progress and growth that made it one of the largest of its type at one time
in South Alabama. It survived two fires in 1893, both of which destroyed the
stock and buildings. In 1908, Robert Long became associated with his father and
brothers. Following Max’s death in 1912, Haiman and Robert purchased their
fathers interest, but continued to operate under the I. Long & Sons style.
“High water mark in the
store’s long history came in 1928 when the present brick building that houses
the firm was constructed. Following the death of his father, Haiman, and later
the death of his uncle, Robert, Alfred Long became owner of the business and
decided to sell out and go to Columbus, Ohio where his sister lives.”
