“Blue Devils Blast Beatrice 79 to 61 For 20th Straight: The
relentless Conecuh County High School’s Blue Devils blasted Beatrice’s Tigers,
79 to 51, in Castleberry Tuesday night for their 20th straight win of the
season. They are undefeated.
“Donnie Kast stripped the nets for 25 points to pace the
scorers. Henry Foster added 20 and Larry Janes, 10. Also scoring for
Castleberry were Finley, eight; Jones, five; Sims, four; Glass, Johnson and
Shipp, two each. Garreth Raines led Beatrice with 19 points, and Rojene Booker
added 17.
“In the preliminary tilt, the Castleberry Bees ran their
record to 14 wins and five losses with an 85 to 24 romp over Beatrice.
“Coach Wayne Pope’s high-flying Blue Devils seemed headed
for the No. 1 seed in the First District Class A Tournament to be held here
week after next. Most of their wins have come over district foes which will be
the basis for the seeding of teams. The veteran Castleberry team has not been
pressed in a game this season.”
“Aggies Outshoot Neal Team 62-47: The Evergreen Aggies
gained revenge for an earlier season defeat Friday night as they whipped the
W.S. Neal Blue Eagles, 62-47, in East Brewton.
“Sid Lambert set the Aggies’ individual single game high
point peak for the season as he ripped the cords for 31 markers, half the Aggie
scoring total. Ronnie Jackson contributed 10 points to the winning cause. Ray
Davis led Neal with 24.”

“Ed Beasley, Phil Dees and Curtis Sullivan Jr. attended the
Alabama-Georgia Tech basketball game at the University Saturday night. They
were the guests of Edwin Andrews, William Riggs and Hubert Sullivan.”
“Aggies Win 44-40 Over Uriah Cagers: The Evergreen High
Aggies stopped a last quarter rally by the Blacksher High Bulldogs of Uriah
here last Friday night to win a well-played contest by a 44-40 score. The
Aggies had the game, but the big show of the evening was the Bulldog’s Gulsby.
The big center went on a 20-point scoring spree, tossing baskets from all
angles.
“The Evergreen scoring was evenly divided as has been the
case all season. Benton Carpenter was the leader with 13 points. Mickey Logue
tallied nine; Gillis ‘Crip’ Jones and Jack Cunningham each made eight points.
Tucker aided Gulsby with eight points of the Uriah total.
“Twelve Aggie Juniors saw action in the 38-23 win for the
local school. Paced by Billy Mudge Lee and Bobby Wells, the Baby Aggies had
control of the game all the way. Lee shot 15 points and Wells 12. McGehee of
Uriah made 13 points.”
“James Carpenter, former star athlete at Evergreen High
School, is playing a forward position on the Sunflower Junior College
basketball squad. The Sunflower Trojans recently defeated Wood Junior College
at Morehead, Miss., home of the Trojans. James scored nine points in this game
and played an excellent defensive and floor game as well.
“While attending high school here, James was a star back and
end on the football squad, a mainstay on the cage team and a leading batsman on
the baseball squad. He could pitch, but preferred to play first base. James is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Carpenter, who live on Bruner Avenue here.”

“Conecuh High Meets Lyeffion Friday: Castleberry, Feb. 1 –
Basketball teams of Conecuh County High School go to Lyeffion Friday to meet
the boys and girls teams of that place. The girls teams of the two schools have
not met but the local boys will be seeking revenge for a defeat here by
Lyeffion several weeks ago.
“The ‘berry pickers’ won their second game of the season
last Friday night – a 17-13 victory over the Evergreen Aggies. Except for a
short time in the third period, Castleberry maintained a one or two point lead
throughout the game, then stretched it to four points as the game ended.
“Archie Barfield, running guard, was high point man for the
winners. He and Gaston King, the other guard, kept the Evergreen score down
with their fine defensive work. Nealy got the tip-off most of the time at
center while Quimby and Weaver, forwards, played their part well. The latter
played a good floor game but missed several ‘crip’ shots. The passing of the
Castleberry team was far superior to that of Evergreen but Coach Thomasson did
not look with favor on the numerous fumbles by his boys.”

“While the Evergreen girls high school basketball team was
defeated by the Greenville girls high
school team on Thursday of last week, they were given credit by the victors for
being the best team ever to visit Greenville.”
