The Mystery Writers of America announced the winners of the 2013 Edgar Allan Poe Awards on May 2 at the 67th Gala Banquet at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, and “Live by Night” by Dennis Lehane received this year’s Edgar Award for Best Novel.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Edgar Allan Poe Awards, commonly called “The Edgars,” they are presented annually by the MWA to honor the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction and television from the previous calendar year.
Lehane’s “Live by Night” was among seven nominees for this year’s Best Novel Edgar. The other nominees included “The Lost Ones” by Ace Atkins, “The Gods of Gotham” by Lyndsay Faye, “Gone Girl: A Novel” by Gillian Flynn, “Potboiler” by Jesse Kellerman, “Sunset” by Al Lamanda and “All I Did Was Shoot My Man” by Walter Mosley.
The MWA also gave out a number of other awards on May 2, including the following:
- Best First Novel by an American Author – “The Expats” by Chris Payone
- Best Paperback Original – “The Last Policeman: A Novel” by Ben H. Winters
- Best Fact Crime – “Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishwoman Haunted the Last Days of Old China” by Paul French
- Best Critical/Biographical – “The Scientific Sherlock Holmes: Cracking the Case with Science and Forensics” by James O’Brien
- Best Short Story – “The Unremarkable Heart” by Karin Slaughter
- Best Juvenile – “The Quick Fix” by Jack D. Ferraiolo
- Best Young Adult – “Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein
- Best Television Episode Teleplay – “A Scandal in Belgravia” – Sherlock
- Robert L. Fish Memorial Award – “When They Are Done With Us” by Patricia Smith
- Grand Master – Ken Follett and Margaret Maron
- Raven Awards – Oline Cogdill, Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore, San Diego and Redondo Beach, Calif.
- Ellery Queen Award – Akashic Books
- The Simon & Schuster – Mary Higgins Clark Award – “The Other Woman” by Hank Phillippi Ryan
