“WEATHER REPORT: With temperatures bouncing between the mid-50s and the upper 80s, not many people could complain about the weather last week. Weatherman Harry Ellis reports .06 inches of rain in Conecuh County last week.”

“The Alabama School of Science and Math has named two Hillcrest High School students as members of its 1993 freshman class. Sophomores Lakesha Womack and Zanthia Wiley received their letters of acceptance last week.”

“Evergreen Mayor Lomax Cassady proclaimed May 12, 1993 as Woodman Rangers Day in celebration of the 90th anniversary of service to youth members. Pictured are Mayor Cassady are Anna G. Hawsey, president of Youth Lodge 1929, and Woodman Field Representative Mitch Crutchfield.”

“The Bank of Evergreen hosted a junior executive last week. Miss Courtney Cook, a student at Evergreen Junior High School, participated in ‘Career Day,” which was organized by Mrs. Ruth Hart, gifted teacher at EJHS.”

“City of Evergreen Police Chief Earnest Section said Tuesday that police officers will begin strict enforcement of the city’s noise ordinance. The chief said officers will begin issuing citations immediately.”

MAY 11, 1978

“The Rev. K.K. Kyser, 84, retired minister and educator, died on Thurs., May 4, at his home on Route E, Evergreen. He was born on May 29, 1893 on the Skinner Plantation near Evergreen of parents who could barely read. His father was the late George Kyser, an ex-slave, and his mother the late Rilla Isom Kyser.”

“Houston Floyd, 57, of Owassa died on Tues., May 2, in a Tuskegee hospital. He was a well and favorably known county resident and educator. He served in the county school system for 27 years, serving at China and Southside Elementary Schools.
“Mr. Floyd was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. His service included a tour of duty in the South Pacific theatre under the late General MacArthur.”

“WEATHER: Earl Windham reports 3.44 inches of rain on May 3, 2.88 inches on May 6 and .23 of an inch on May 7.”

“The 13th Annual Conecuh County FFA-4H Market Hog Show will be held Monday at the Evergreen Cooperative Stockyard Show Arena on North Main Street.”

“The Howard University Law School in Washington, D.C. announces the graduation of Phyllis L. Gray Sat., May 13.”

“Caroline Cavanaugh, executive vice president of the Andalusia Chamber of Commerce, will be the featured speaker at the first annual Evergreen Chamber of Commerce Promotion Banquet to be held on Saturday night, May 27, at seven o’clock in the cafeteria of the Southside School.”

MAY 9, 1963

Local weather reporter W.D. Simonton reported no rain in Evergreen between May 2 and May 7.

“Repton Masons Plan Fish Supper May 11: A catfish supper will be held Saturday by the Repton Masonic Lodge No. 575 and Eastern Star Chapter No. 252. Plates are $1 each and serving will begin at five o’clock p.m. and continue until everyone is served. Proceeds from the supper will go to the Lodge building fund.”



“The Evergreen Civitan Club elected James Finley president at a meeting Tuesday night. Finley had served the club as president for several months since Murray Johnson moved out of town. He is associated with Evergreen Auto Parts.

“Elected to serve with Finley were officers: W.L. Thames, vice-president; Eugene Darby, secretary; Lawrence Gladwell, treasurer; Earl Windham, sergeant at arms; Mack Williams Jr., chaplain; J.T. Coleman, chairman board of directors; and Delma Bowers, Ralph Crysell, Alvin Reeves and Morris Ward, directors.”

“Get Your Stamps By Saturday Noon: There will be no more window service after 12 noon on Saturdays according to Evergreen Postmaster Bill Salter. Salter said that the new ruling would go into effect this Saturday, May 11.”

MAY 13, 1948

“John T. Moody, age 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Moody, died Thurs., May 6, as result of injuries sustained when he was struck by a bus while crossing the street in Beaumont, Texas, early May 1. Mr. Moody had just gotten off from his job with the Flash Transfer Co. of that city and was en route to his hotel when the accident occurred.”

“DEMOLAYS MEET – The Evergreen Chapter of Demolay met Wednesday night April 21 at 7:30 p.m. with 18 members and nine Masons present. The initiating degree was given to the following boys: Robert Wells, W.K. Salter, Carl Stacey, Kenneth Thompson, Harry Booker, Bayne Petrey and Brown Hagood.
“These boys were given the Demolay degree Wednesday night, May 5, which made them full pledged members. The Demolay boys gave the Rainbow Girls a party at Binion’s Pool Monday evening, May 10. Refreshments were served.
“The next meeting will be May 19.
“Curtis Walker, Scribe.”

“The commencement season was ushered in at Evergreen High School Saturday night, May 8, 1948 with a senior banquet and prom. While only the seniors, their dates, and the faculty attended the banquet, the general public was admitted to the prom. Music was furnished by the Troy Wavemen Orchestra.”

“Alabama got a new First Lady on Wednesday May 5 when Gov. James E. Folsom and the former Miss Jamelle Moore slipped off to the little town of Rockford in Coosa County and had a Baptist preacher to marry them in the local Baptist Church. Folsom is the first Alabama governor ever to marry while in office.”

80 YEARS AGO
MAY 11, 1933

“Mrs. Ella McCrory, age 83, well known and much beloved lady of this county died at her home in Beat One Monday after an illness of about two weeks. Deceased was the widow of the late W.M. McCrory, Confederate veteran, who preceded her in death, having passed away in 1914.”

“Castleberry, May 10 – The 1933 carlot strawberry season came to a close here Friday with shipment of the last car. The season total is 137 cars, the least number sent from Castleberry in 13 years.”

“While going up the steps at the residence of Mr. Robinson near Paul Tuesday afternoon, Pete Millsap fell and sustained a fractured leg which at first was thought to be of such serious nature as to necessitate amputation.
“He was carried to Turberville Hospital at Century, where X-ray pictures were made and latest information is to the effect that there is an excellent chance to save the injured limb.”

“Effective this week the management of the Evergreen Theatre was taken over by Tom Piggott, local citizen who has been connected with the operation of the show as operator most of the time for the past several years.”

“Frank Hagood has been fortunate enough to be selected as one of a limited number of college men, who will be given an opportunity to make an extensive European tour under a special plan. He will serve an apprenticeship on the S.S. Cranford during a voyage which will carry him to Germany, France, Holland and probably England and Spain. The position which he has accepted offers a number of attractive possibilities, it combines regular duties with social life on board ship and opportunity to visit a number of foreign ports. He plans to sail from New Orleans on May 30.”
