“Warriors end season with pair of losses: The Sparta Academy Warriors closed out a disappointing baseball season by dropping a pair of games last week for a record of two wins and 10 losses, according to Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr. The leading hitter was Terry Peacock with a .436 batting average for the season. He is a sophomore.
“May 2, Fort Dale downed Sparta, 6-2, in a game played here. Tommy Hutcheson was the losing pitcher. The Warriors were guilty of five fielding errors.
“Peacock had a double and Jeff Johnson and Ronny McKenzie a single each to account for Sparta’s only three hits.
“Monroe Academy used nine hits and six Sparta errors to win, 13-3, here last Thursday. Peacock was the leading pitcher.
“McKenzie had a double and a single and Johnson and Johnny Ralls a single each for Sparta.”
“Scoutmaster Mabry Stuckey of Evergreen Boy Scout Troop 40 presented awards to these Cub Scouts of Pack 40 at a recent meeting at the Scout Hut: Littlejohn Wade, Scott Salter, Daniel Wright, Marcus Blair and Rob Stuart.”

“Ronny Golson, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.T. Golson of Evergreen, Route One, has been selected as Boys State Representative from Lyeffion High School.
“Ronny is an outstanding student and a very good athlete. In addition to being one of the Lyeffion Yellow Jackets’ best football players, Ronny has played basketball two years, and is a member of the track team this year.”
“Conecuh Amateur League: Mixonville hitters continued on a rampage Sunday as they crushed Red Level, 15 to 4. The club has now poured 29 runs across the plate in two games. Junior Hanks was the winning pitcher while Craig took the loss.
“Damascus edged Flat Rock by a 6 to 4 tally for their second straight win. Buddy Ball got credit for his second win while Buddy Hobbs absorbed the loss.
“Sunday’s schedule has Mixonville at Paul, Damascus at Red Level and McKenzie at Flat Rock.”
“Aggies Slip Past Frisco City, 7-6: The Evergreen Aggies put down a furious seventh-inning rally by the Frisco City Whippets to whip the Whippets, 7-6, in Frisco City Thursday afternoon.
“The Aggies pushed across five runs in the sixth inning after grabbing a 2-0 lead early in the game. The victors got only two hits, singles by Sid Lambert and Donnie Jones, in their big inning.
“Frisco City banged out four hits in their six-run game. Three Evergreen errors aided the Whippets in their outburst.
“Jimmy Weaver relieved Ronnie Jackson who had gone all the way and got the last Frisco City batsman to fly out to left field. Joe Kelly went all the way and absorbed the loss for Frisco City.
“Double Plays: Jackson, Raines and Weaver; Lambert and Weaver of Evergreen. King and Lawrence of Frisco City.”

“Local Drivers Win At Millers Ferry: Two local drivers were winners in the weekly drag races at the Millers Ferry Drag Strip. Top honors were taken by ‘Big Deal’ Jacobs of Enterprise.
“Dale Brown took top honors in super stock No. 2 class with a run in 13.2 seconds. Aubrey Padgett was street eliminator.”
“Monroeville Has Some Openings In Golf Tourney: There are still some openings available in the golf tournament to be played in Monroeville on May 23, according to George T. Jones, member of the tournament committee. He invites Evergreen area golfers to register and take part.
“Jones said that registration will close on May 14 and starting times will be mailed to players on May 18. Entry fee of $8 includes lunch. Entrée fee and qualifying score should be mailed to Moses Katz, Box 691, Monroeville, Ala.
“The tournament will be played on the beautiful Vanity Fair Foundation Golf Course. Championship play will be 27 holes, medal play. All other flights will be 9-hole match play. The field is limited to the first 96 golfers to enter. Four prizes will be awarded in each flight. Minimum age limit is 16 years.”

“Greenies Slash Out 11 To 7 Win Over Brewton: The Evergreen Greenies inaugurated the 1948 baseball season Sunday with a decisive 11 to 7 victory over Brewton. Before an opening day crowd of about 250 spectators, the locals launched a 16-hit assault on the visitors to completely overpower them.
“The scoring started early as the Greenies pushed across two runs on two hits in the first inning. After Bolton had led off with a single, Harper slashed out a hit scoring Bolton from second. Harper’s hit got thru the centerfielder’s legs and he raced home with the inning’s second tally.
“Three more runs in the third enabled the locals to regain their lead. After Edsel Johnson had opened with a double to center, Ottis Johnson pushed him across with a single. Nobles forced Otis to second. W.T. Tolbert tripled, scoring Nobles and himself on a Brewton error.
“The locals added three more runs in the fourth on two walks by Bolton and Harper, E. Johnson forcing Bolton at second, followed by Ottis Johnson’s three-run homer to center.
“Wendell Hart blasted another circuit clout in the fifth to make the county 9 to 3 in favor of Evergreen.
“After the visitors had tallied once in the sixth on three bingles, the Greenies made the score 10 to 4 in their favor on McDonalds’s single, followed by White’s one base knock.
“The local’s last marker came in the seventh on Bolton’s triple and Edsel Johnson’s double.
“Edsel Johnson had to come to the mound in the eighth after Brewton had made a three-run rally off Hart.”

“Evergreen Defeats Luverne In Opener: Luverne and Evergreen ushered in the 1933 season of the Central Alabama Baseball League here Sunday afternoon, Evergreen taking the initial tilt by a score of 3 to 2, behind the superb hurling of Loyce Hyde, slender righthand speedballer.
“The game was a thriller throughout, with both Hayes, Luverne pitcher, and Hyde, sailing along behind good support of their mates, plus their ability to bear down in the pinches. Hayes was the hitting star for the game, reaching Hyde’s fireball for a triple and a home run, and accounting for all Luverne’s runs.
“Manager Jeter brought a fine ball club to the home of the Irishman for the opening tilt, and his huskies kept the locals on the jump to keep them away from the plate.
“The locals, true to tradition, kept pecking away at Hayes’ slants, scoring a run at the time, and fielding brilliantly to protect their lead.
“The two teams took the field for the initial contest in natty, brand new uniforms, and played the game in accord with the appearance of the players – clean and sportsmanlike. Not one untoward incident was recorded during the progress of the game, both clubs living up to the league mandate of ‘no squabbling’ and conducting the game as befits gentlemen and sportsmen. In that connection, however, it must be recorded that the umpiring was highly efficient, Messrs. Farnham and Revel rendering their decisions in accordance with playing rules and in an eminently fair and impartial manner.”
