“Sparta girls do well Tri-State Track Meet: The Sparta Academy Girls Track Team did themselves, their school, their parents and their town ‘proud’ with their performance in the Tri-States Private Schools Track Meet held Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
“The mile relay team placed fourth with a time of 4:28.2. Lynn Hyde placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15 ft. 7-1/2 in. (short of her jump of 16 ft. 4 in. that won 1st place in the State Meet).
“The mile relay team, which also won first place in the State Private School Association Track Meet, is composed of Lynn Hyde, Lesa Ralls, Missy Price and Cheri Johnson.
“The girls are coached by Richard Brown. Coach Brown, who also is head coach of the male football and basketball teams at Sparta, said: ‘I am extremely proud of these young ladies and their achievements in track this year. I would also like to point out that of the four, only one, Lesa, is a senior. So, the Sparta Girls Track Team could well be considered ‘hard-to-beat’ in future state and regional competition.”

“Miss Nell Stuart has blazed a trail of tournament victories that mark her as the top lady golfer in South Alabama. The recent Auburn graduate picked up her latest trophy last week when she waded through a field of top golfers from over the Southeast for third place in the Montgomery Country Clubs prestige-packed invitational.
“Nell won the Brewton, Greenville and Monroeville tournaments this year and in addition fired the low amateur score in a Pro-Am event when the touring pros visited Pensacola Country Club.
“An accomplished swinger, Nell doesn’t mind competing with the menfolks, either, and won her flight in the Evergreen Golf Club’s annual meet. She bangs her tee shot out with the best of them and often leaves the male members of the local club far behind and blushing as she outdistances their ‘Sunday shots’ off the tee.
“Nell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tal Stuart, but it is to her uncle, Bill McGehee, that she looks for instruction on the links. It should be pointed out that Bill has been the ‘teaching pro’ for local club members for many years giving help to all who ask him, and Nell is easily his outstanding pupil.
“Nell plans to continue her golf as she begins teaching duties this fall, probably in Birmingham.”

“Centerville, Shreve Win In Conecuh League Play: Centerville took a firm hold on first place in the Conecuh Amateur League with a 5-4 win over Flat Rock Sunday for their fourth victory of season against no losses.
“J.W. Windham did the hurling for Centerville with Wayland Johns and Dan Edson sharing the catching chores. Flat Rock used its Barlow battery, James pitching and Huston catching.
“Shreve defeated Paul, 11-10, in a slugging match.
“Shreve’s Eagles pushed four runs home in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and tie the score at 10-10 then scored a single run in the last of the night to win 11-10.
“Paul used two pitchers, Harold Godwin and Herman Thomas, in an effort to stop the Eagles. Grady McLain caught for the Aces. For the Eagles, it was Wilton Sanford on the mound and Leroy Smith behind the plate all the way.”
“Greenies Lose To Jay; Atmore Game Rained Out: The Evergreen Greenies were handed their second loss in three Dixie Amateur League starts last Thursday night in Jay, Fla. by a 5-3 score. It was the first night game of the season for the Greenies. Jay is among the leading pennant contenders being only a half game out of second place.
“The Greenies were scheduled to play Atmore in Atmore Sunday afternoon but rained out. Teams had just finished batting practice and infield drill when a sudden cloudburst ended any hope of a ball game.
“In other league games last Thursday, May 11, Monroeville shutout Uriah-Booneville, 7 to 0, and Atmore outslugged Bay Minette, 18 to 10. Sunday Monroeville sprayed basehits all over the ballpark and walloped Jay, 22 to 8. Uriah-Booneville and Bay Minette were all tied up, 11 to 11, when the game was called because of the Sunday Blue Law.”
“The Evergreen Greenies will take their second crack at the league leading Monroeville nine tonight under the lights in Monroeville. Evergreen lost to the undefeated Monroeville team here earlier in the season by a 7-4 score and are anxious to even the count with the Dixie Amateur League’s hottest club.
“Sunday afternoon the Greenies will try to square their series with Jay, playing here in Brooks Stadium.”
