“The Monroe Academy Vols cruised to an easy 11-1 win over the Sparta Academy Warriors behind two-hit pitching Monday afternoon at The Murphy Club field.
“Tommy Hutcheson and Ronny McKenzie collected one hit each to account for Sparta’s attack. Mike Mixon scored the only run for the Warriors after getting on base on an error in the third inning. Jeff Johnson was the losing pitcher.
“Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr. states that through the 11 games played these three players are leading in batting statistics for the Warriors: Terry Peacock, batting .363 with eight RBI; Tommy Hutcheson, batting .357 with six RBI; and Ronny McKenzie, batting .357 with 11 RBI.”
From “The Colyum” by Bob Bozeman – “Keith Pugh, outstanding wide receiver for Alabama’s Crimson Tide and much-loved Evergreen son (although he prepped at Monroe Academy), was kind enough to drop by the office the first of the week and let me take a look at his National Championship Ring. Needless to say, Keith played an important role in the Tide’s march to that 14-7 win over Penn State in the Sugar Bowl that earned the National Championship… and, of course, he was proud as could be of THE RING.
“I can’t blame Keith for being proud of THE RING. It is a beauty, having the year, University of Alabama, Sugar Bowl score, etc. engraved on it, and a 1/4-carat diamond in the middle. That’s about as descriptive as I can be, so just slow Keith down, next time you see him, and ask to take a look.”

Coach Wendell Hart’s charges will enter the district playoffs, the date and site of which will be set later.

“Junior League Team To Be Fielded Here This Summer: The Ford Motor Co. and its Ford dealers throughout the nation are preparing to help the American Legion make 1949 the greatest in 22 years of Junior Baseball history, company officials announced today.
“Commander Wallace Ward of Post No. 50 of the American Legion and Mr. C.P. Deming, President of the Evergreen Motor Car Co., have completed negotiations to co-sponsor a team of boys who will not have attained their 17th birthday before Jan. 1, 1949 (a boy born prior to Jan. 1, 1932 is not eligible). “Also, from the national level, three movies have been produced to facilitate the promotion; namely, ‘Play Ball Son,’ ‘All Out For Baseball,’ and ‘It’s Your Team.’ As a companion piece, the booklet ‘Play Ball Son,’ has been made available and over two million copies have been distributed through Ford dealers.”

“Evergreen Will Play Florala This P.M.: The local baseball team will journey to Florala this afternoon to play the team of that place in the third game played this season. The game which was scheduled to be played here last Sunday between the locals and Florala was not played due to a number of Florala players not reaching here in time. It is said that the car on which they were riding broke down enroute and they were not able to get another to finish the trip for several hours. This game will be played here at a later date, probably as one of a double bill.
“Evergreen has only played two games thus far, winning one from Luverne and losing one to Greenville.
“There is not another game scheduled to be played here until May 13, on which date Chapman comes here. Evergreen plays Greenville in Greenville next Sunday.
“Local fans are much indebted to the Evergreen Theatre for installing a large score board on the local field which will help them keep up with games in the future. The board is a large one, well lettered and easily read from the stands. Messrs. Hanna, operators of the theatre made a real contribution to the pleasure of baseball enthusiasts when they installed this board.”
“BOY SCOUTS: The Boy Scout Troop 80 of Evergreen met Monday night at 7:00 for their weekly meeting.
“The business was on the scout baseball team and initiation. One new scout joined, William Chapman.”
