JAN. 19, 1989

“Harry Ellis reports a trace of rain on Jan. 12, .30 of an inch on Jan. 13 and 1.14 inches on Jan. 14.”

“New Judge of Probate Rogene Booker was administered the oath of office by retiring Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key in an impressive ceremony Monday morning before a large crowd in the main courtroom of the Conecuh County Courthouse. Judge Booker announced that he will retain the present staff and work with them to offer the best possible service to the people of the county.”

“Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Gorman Houston congratulates Circuit Judge Sam Welch after administering the oath of office. Looking on are Judge Welch’s parents, Henry and Dale Welch, and his wife, the former Carol Phillips of Frisco City. Judge Welch became only the second judge of the 35th Circuit when he took the oath last Thursday afternoon at the Monroe County Courthouse. He succeeds Judges Robert E.L. Key of Evergreen, who retired after over 23 years on the bench.”

“Miss Shawn Hammonds, Conecuh County’s Junior Miss, is spending her week in Montgomery preparing for the state Junior Miss pageant this weekend.”

“An intensive 18-month investigation resulted in the arrest of 19 persons on federal and state drug charges in Conecuh County Saturday night. A small army of law enforcement officers fanned out over the county and arrested 13 persons on federal charges and six on state charges.”

JAN. 17, 1974

“Eugene Hyde is sworn in as postmaster of the Evergreen Post Office by E.P. Register, sectional center manager for the Dothan-Evergreen centers, at a ceremony on Jan. 9. A native and lifelong resident of Evergreen, the new postmaster went to work at the local post office in 1964 as a temporary clerk, the appointment becoming permanent in 1965. He was promoted to foreman of mails in 1972, a position he held until being named postmaster. A graduate of Evergreen High School and Holmes Jr. College in Goodman, Miss. and a veteran of four years service in the Air Force, Hyde was recruited for the postal service by the late Harris Williamson and employed by former Postmaster Bill Salter.”

“Rainfall through January 11th totalled only .8 of an inch according to Earl Windham.”

“Conecuh County is threatened with the loss of its only ambulance service. Troy Smith of Smith Ambulance Service Inc. said today that due to an operating loss for the past two years and new federal and state regulations that would require additional expense it seemed doubtful if his company could continue operations after Oct. 1.
“Smith said that the ambulance service has operated at a loss for two years due to the small number of calls. He pointed out that only two calls had been made since Jan. 1.”

JAN. 20, 1944

“According to a letter received Wednesday by C.N. Stallworth from Congressman George Grant, the local airport has been approved for development as a Class 3 airport and $650,000 has been allocated for development of the field.”

“Joins Marines: Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 19 – Robert G. Bozeman Jr., son of R.G. Bozeman Sr. of Evergreen, has been accepted for duty with the Marine Corps Reserve and will be ordered to training sometime in February, according to Major D.A. Holladay, officer in charge.
“Pvt. Bozeman graduated from Evergreen High School last Spring. He was president of the local chapter National Beta Club, education honor fraternity and editor of the school paper. Since graduation, he has been employed by The Evergreen Courant.”

“Ensign Vernon Millsap, who graduate today from the Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame, will arrive home Friday on a six-day leave.”

“Mrs. Peter Wolfe has returned from Ft. Bragg, N.C., where she visited her husband, Pvt. Wolfe.”

“The merchants of Evergreen announce that beginning Thurs., Feb. 3, 1944 at 12 o’clock they will begin closing Thursday afternoons. This is in the interest of creating better working conditions for all employees. They would like to ask the cooperation of the people of Conecuh County in this move, as it is their wish to give the very best service possible.
"The undersigned agreement herewith agree to being closing Feb. 3, 1944 at 12 o’clock and close every month in the year with the exception of December hereafter. This is a step toward keeping our help satisfied, giving them every Thursday afternoon off to rest.”

JAN. 17, 1929

“Rev. M.E. Grant, 52, a superannuated Methodist minister who was reared in Conecuh County, died at Gantt, Ala. in Covington County Saturday and was buried Sunday afternoon in Gantt cemetery. Funeral services were in charge of the Masonic order, of which he was a member. Survivors are a widow and seven children.”

“W.S. Dreaden, clerk of Conecuh County Circuit Court, has been named register of Conecuh County Circuit Court in equity for the next six years.
“Mr. Dreaden succeeds W.D. Letford in that position. Mr. Letford’s term expired Monday.”

“With only two weeks remaining in which citizens can pay poll taxes which will enable them to vote in the year’s elections, payments were only ‘creeping’ in at the office of J.R. Kelly, tax collector, yesterday.”

“Assurance that Conecuh County will get some paved roads before funds from the last $25,000,000 road bond issue are exhausted was received Wednesday with the announcement from Woolsey Finnell, state highway director, that ‘state route No. 3, east and west of Evergreen,’ will be paved for 10 miles.”

From “Castleberry News” – “There were no services at the churches here Sunday on account of the epidemic of influenza.
“The high school and city school opened Monday morning after being closed for the past several weeks on account of influenza.”

“Robt. (Bob) Martin, who is widely known to the citizens of this county is now with The Evergreen Pharmacy as pharmacist. Mr. Martin for number of years was connected with The City Drug Store of this place and was also engaged in drug business for himself for a number of years.”

“CASTLEBERRY GETS LIGHT FROM NEW POWER PLANT: Castleberry, Ala., Jan. 15 – the Deuel Power Co., owners of a 15-year franchise to supply lights and power to Castleberry, has begun operation of its plant.
“The company has not yet connected all wired homes and stores to its line but will do this as soon as additional equipment arrives.
“The company’s ice plant also has been installed and in a test operation last week, made its first ice.”

“The Repton post office was moved the past week from the Long building on a side street to the Warr building on the front street. It is much more convenient and presents a nicer appearance.”

“Mrs. W.W. Kelly’s classroom has succeeded in raising enough money to buy a victrola, which they are now enjoying during the chapel exercises and vacant periods.”

From “Brownville News” - “The Opoosum hunt was enjoyed by all Saturday night with Allie Spence as leader.”
