From “Soldier News,” a “Letter From Ottis Johnson” – “Dear Family: This letter will be brief because of space but after our Thanksgiving letter several men brought items to our attention that they thought deserved mention. So here is some more news about ourselves.
“Early in the cruise we had an airplane alert and everyone made ready as the fighter planes zoomed over us to the attack. On the forward part of the ship, manning the machine guns was a group of Marines. One of them gave a ‘rebel yell’ and threw his wallet on the deck. ‘Everything in that says I get the first one.’ When finally our guns did tally at least one, we could not tell who got it but it sounded like a rooting section at a Army-Navy game. All our boys and the men on nearby ships gave a cheer that must have been heard in Tokyo. How those boys strapped to the machine guns could jump up and down and cheer is a mystery – but they did.”
(Ottis Johnson would return to Conecuh County after his service in World War II and would play minor league professional baseball for the two seasons with the Dothan Browns. In June 1951, he was beaned by Headland Dixie Runners pitcher Jack Clifton, and Johnson died eight years later. His was the last beaning fatality in a regular season minor league game, according to BaseballRefernce.com. He ended his career with a .336 lifetime batting average.)

“Night Hawks Schedule Three Games For Week: The Evergreen Night Hawks completed arrangements early this week for a three-game basketball schedule for Evergreen fans during the weekend.
“The Georgiana Athletic Club was the opposition Wednesday night. Thursday night the All-Star McKenzie team will be here and on Saturday night the Mobile YMCA from Alabama’s Gulf City will be the attraction.
“Announcement of the schedule for the weekend was made by John T. Hanks, the Night Hawks manager. All three games were set for the Armory.
“In the All-Star McKenzie team and the Mobile YMCA, the Night Hawks will meet opposition that will be entirely new to them, neither of these teams having previously been met this season. Georgiana had been met three times previously, the Night Hawks winning twice, 29 to 13, and 24 to 16, and losing once, 9 to 10.
“The Evergreen line-up for the games will be chosen from the following: Ivey, Hagood, McCreary and McReynolds, forwards; Sanders, Jones, Robinson and Howell, guards; Hanks and E. Kelly, centers.
“The Mobile team sent in this prospective line-up: Barnes, Delhomne Curry, forwards; Sheridan, center; Torbert and Allen, guards.
“The Night Hawks will play what is probably their hardest foe of the season in the Mobile team. This team is a member of a Mobile city league and finished on top at the end of the first half.
“All games will begin at 7:45 p.m.”
